Perhaps, but we don't know a lot of the details as well; perhaps they were only told to expect cruisers... plus things tend to happen fast in combat that cause people to make incorrect snap judgements....

True; Morrison comments how the US pilots were "out of practice" in attacking maneuvering targets. That and the fisherman tends to exaggerate the size of the "one that got away" implies to me (as you say) their mind was focused on cruiser-sized ships.

On the other hand, the Japanese had not ventured to expose the Musashi to combat prior to October, 1944. Why would the pilots expect to see battleships today?

a question:

could somebody recommend a reliable source as to late prewar/interwar IJN greys? were colour formulae much changed after the 1930's?

I have always thought the 'value' of the paintwork of certain IJN warships c1930's seemed extremely dark in certain b/w photographs. Perhaps darker even than the samples we have for Sasebo. But alas I realise, b/w photos can be extremely misleading.
