TRIVIA---Veterans Day trivia.
Two actors who played aviators in THE TWILIGHT ZONE were aviators in World War II and were shot down and became POWs.
Ed Kemmerer played the flight engineer in the classic THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" which starred William Shatner and was directed by Richard Donner (LETHAL WEAPON, SUPERMAN). During World War II, Kemmerer's P-51 Mustang was shot down over occupied France, and he became a POW at the Stalag Luft III POW camp that was made famous in THE GREAT ESCAPE. In THE GREAT ESCAPE, fighter pilot Capt. Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) escaped from Stalag Luft III and was then recaptured. Ironically, Kemmerer also escaped from Stalag Luft III and was recaptured.
Dewey Martin played astronaut Corey in THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode "I Shot An Arrow Into The Air". During World War II, Martin flew an F4F Wildcat during the Battle of Midway and was forced to ditch his fighter in the ocean because his aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown, was damaged and later sank. Martin later flew the F6F Hellcat and was shot down twice, the last time being in 1945 when he was captured and was a POW in a Japanese prison camp until Japan surrendered.
