Russian landing ship destroyed at Sea of Azov port, naval forces say

Ship was reportedly transporting armoured vehicles to occupied Ukrainian city

The latest:

Ukraine says it has destroyed a Russian ship in Sea of Azov.

NATO lays out plan for more Ukraine support, stronger alliance.

Alliance approves more battle groups in eastern Europe.

U.S. to welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing war, sources say.

Ukraine's navy reported on Thursday that it had destroyed the Russian landing ship Orsk in the Sea of Azov, docked at the occupied Ukrainian port city of Berdyansk.

The Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine released photos and video on Facebook of fire and thick smoke coming from the port area. Russia did not immediately comment on the claim.

Russia has been in possession of the port in southern Ukraine since Feb. 27 — a few days after Russia's invasion of the country began — and the Orsk had disembarked armoured vehicles there on Monday for use in Moscow's offensive, the Zvezda TV channel of the Russian Defence Ministry said earlier this week.

According to the report, the Orsk was the first Russian ship to enter Berdyansk, which is about 80 kilometres west along the coast from the besieged city of Mariupol.

Ukraine also claimed two more ships were damaged and a 2,721-tonne fuel tank was destroyed when the Orsk was sunk, causing a fire that spread to nearby ammunition supplies.
When Russia unleashed its invasion Feb. 24 in Europe's biggest offensive since the Second World War, a swift toppling of Ukraine's government seemed likely. But a month into the fighting, Moscow is bogged down in a grinding military campaign of attrition after meeting fierce Ukrainian resistance.

Some sources are saying it was not the Orsk but the Saratov. Both are Alligator-class LSTs.

It is unclear what happened. The distance is too great for a tactical missile. The firing range of Point-Y is no more than 120 km. In Mariupol (the nearest point, 80 km. in the port of Berdyansk), the nationalists destroyed all heavy weapons, up to mortars. In addition, their parts are divided into small groups and are unlikely to be able to launch such a rocket. I think it's either sabotage or a technical explosion. The ship was built in 1966.

Satellite images released by Maxar Technologies on Friday are showing the aftermath of a Russian ship at a port in the Black Sea that Ukraine's Navy said was "destroyed" yesterday.

The images taken in the southern city of Berdyansk reveal "a Russian Alligator-class landing ship that is burned and partially submerged near one of the port’s loading/unloading quays," according to Maxar Technologies.

Ukraine's Navy claimed Thursday to have blasted the Russian vessel that morning.

"A large paratroop ship ‘Orsk’ of the black sea fleet of occupiers was destroyed in the occupied Russian port Berdyansk," the country's Navy announced on Facebook. "Glory to Ukraine!"

Fox News' Tyler O'Neil contributed to this report.

Thanks for the image Tim. It will be interesting to find out how it was destroyed. I hope it was heavily laden with war materiel.

Two Russian Navy landing ships, possibly the ones which survived the attack in Berdyansk yesterday, are seen heading back to navy base Sevastopol in Crimea today. Believed now in Sevastopol
