ModelMonkey, you still have some German offerings. Do you have potentially in the works some kind of straight stem Scharnhorst version (can be gneisenau too) for Flyhawk 1/700? I can scratch build I guess a lot, but the rear hanger with catapult in the rear as seen on both Gneisenau and Scharnhorst early on is the only bit of scratch building that is a little tricky to do from scratch. I dont ask for other things like funnel and straight stem as no interest in those for sure I guess to do from scratch, but the hangar is available in some form already.. Hence a question. :)

Hi and thanks for your interest and message!

We offer two 1/700 scale Scharnhorst class hangar/catapults, the early catapult pedestal and hangar for Gneisenau and the late Gneisenau hangar shown at bottom. I regret to say that there are no immediate plans for more Scharnhorst class products.

Hope this helps and thanks again.

Happy to announce we've added a set of small, closed chocks to the catalog, 3 mm in length.

They appear on catalog pages for US Navy subjects in 1/350, 1/201-1/325, 1-200 and 1/192 scales and may be suitable for other subjects and scales, too.

Would you be adding open chocks in 1/350 as well?

If the closed chocks sell well, yes! I'm working on some big projects for aircraft models at the moment but once they're done I'll be adding more common ship fittings to the catalog.

For example, rigging blocks, deadeyes and jeer blocks in various sizes were recently added to the catalog for sailing ship modelers. They range in size from tiny 2 mm single-sheave blocks up to 8 mm triple-sheave jeer blocks and deadeyes. Jeer blocks are used to lift large yards and seen from the side are more boxy in shape than other blocks (see drawing at bottom).

Does Model Monkey produce 1/700 scale stacks for USN four stackers? The ones in Flyhawks kit are not round like the real ones and could use replacing.

Presently, we don't offer any funnels for four-stackers but hope to in the future.

Here's what we do offer for 1/700 scale US Navy destroyers: https://www.model-monkey.com/destroyers-700

We're very close to releasing our first of two Bristol Beaufighter observer's stations intended for the classic Revell 1/32 scale Bristol Beaufighter model kit. This first release represents the early radar-equipped Mk.I and Mk.II nightfighter configuration. This early version is equipped with drum-fed Hispano-Suiza 20 mm cannons and Airborne Interception (AI) Mk.IV radar. These early radar-equipped Beaufighters fought during the Battle of Britain.

The next release represents the late observer's station for Mk.VI day fighters, TF Mk.X maritime strike aircraft, and Australian Mk.21 Beaufighters which were equipped with bin-fed cannons, a different seat stand for the observer and some other detail differences.

Cockpits for early and late Beaufighters, dihedral tailplanes, radar equipment, and a torpedo are available now.

Final early observer's station detailing and design tweaks are being completed this week. Test prints scheduled for the weekend.

Below are some renderings of the design. The first two renderings show the observer's station paired with the pilot's cockpit and intra-spar equipment bay ahead of the observer's station. Together, they form a very large model. The cockpit and equipment bay are available separately.

Some of what you see will change a bit.

Work continues on the 1/32 scale Bristol Beaufighter early nightfighter Radar Operator's Station. Test prints of the large parts appear in the post above. Here are photos of the test prints of Hispano-Suiza 20 mm cannon ammunition drums and spare drum racks.

The Beaufighter was fit with four 20 mm cannons, making it a very hard-hitting aircraft. Early Beaufighter cannons were fed from portable ammunition drums. The real ammunition drums held up to 60 rounds of 20 mm explosive ammunition. The rear of the drum was perforated with small holes which permitted a person to see how many rounds were loaded in the drum at a glance. Unlike drums fit to cannons inside wings like those of the Spitfire, Hurricane, Typhoon, etc., the Beaufighter's drums had a handle so that the cannons could be rearmed by the radar operator in flight. The model accurately captures the perforations and handle.

The bottom of the real racks stood away from the Beaufighter's fuselage sides just a bit. The models accurately capture this feature, too.

The model will come with 12 drums, 4 for the cannons and 8 for the racks.

Test prints of the 1/32 scale Beaufighter radar operator station's radar equipment, operator's seat, and seat stand are successful. These features would very difficult to build from scratch with accuracy for most modelers.

Compare the size of the 5 radar components to the size of the seat. The real components were big, bulky, heavy, and together took up a lot of space in the fuselage.

Next test prints are the Hispano-Suiza 20 mm cannons and heater duct. Then the model will be ready for sale.

Wow!! That's impressive. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but any chance you will be doing later marks (TF MkX)? A substantial amount of what you have done already applies.

Steve
ps nevermind, went on the site!! Awesome

Hi Steve,

Yes, an observer's station for TF Mk. X will be released after the early station. Below is a rendering of that design at about 80% complete.

David, most of the plans we offer have been available for years. But not all together from a single source popular with modelers.

We compiled the plans we offer from several different sources and make them all available together on one webpage as a convenient courtesy to anyone who would like them. We do so at our cost. On the download page for each plan, we state where each plan comes from and post a link to the source so that people interested in similar plans can find more plans directly from the source, if desired.

We extend our sincere appreciation to The Dreadnought Project, the NARA and USDoT. staff and the many generous private researchers who continue to dedicate considerable time, personal resources and effort to preserve and make these plans available to the public and to posterity.

In the meantime, enjoy our new 1/32 scale Bristol Beaufighter Radar Operator's Station (see two posts above) and come see more than 200 shipyard drawings for free download at Model-Monkey.com.

Hi Steve,

Regarding the plans you have posted (which is very great and thank you very much), I noticed a warning that states the plans my not be in the scale marked on them due to resizing during scanning. I know that's the case, but what I was wondering is in a set of plans, can the individual sheets be different or would all sheets in a set be the same scale, whatever that works out to be?

Thanks again for going through the effort to make them available on your site.

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Great question.

The good news is that many of the plans were scanned at the correct scale. In other words, the scan matches the scale of the original drawing. But not all of them. It is very possible that different sheets within the same set might have been scanned at different scales. It all depends on how the person or persons who did the original scanning set the scale on the scanner(s) when he or she scanned the original sheet. That person or persons may have changed the setting when scanning different sheets.

The plans are offered as-is, at whatever scale they were originally scanned. This means that each sheet may not necessarily have been scanned at the scale that the original plans were drawn in as stated on the sheet.

Also note that these are scans of original drawings that are in most cases many decades old. Depending on well they were stored over those many decades, the original drawings may be damaged or distorted. The scanning process would capture that distortion, not correct it.

For modeling purposes, each sheet should be checked against any graphic scale that appears on the sheet to determine the scan's actual scale and whether or not they should be rescaled within your own computer to bring them to as true a scale as possible. Here's one way to do that:

For US Navy Booklet of General Plans drawings (BoGP), this can best be done by noting the longitudinal scales that show the "stations". See sample, cropped, closeup scans below.

The length of US ships are often measured using "stations". The images below are closeups of scans that show where stations are located on a typical BoGP drawing, in this case USS Saratoga CV-3. On BoGP drawings, stations are typically drawn at either 8 feet apart or 4 feet apart. There are always exceptions, but 8 feet and 4 feet are common. We can then use a bit of math and a digital caliper to check to see if our drawing was accurately scanned at the correct scale.

1. For example, let's pick a favorite subject's BoGP drawing, USS Saratoga CV-3. Let's say that we learned from Wikipedia that the real USS Saratoga CV-3 was a bit more than 800 feet long. We see that the graphical scale on the full-size scan of the BoGP drawing records the length of the hull with station numbers up to a bit more than 200. 800 feet / 200 stations = 4. That means that the stations are 4 feet apart. We don't need precise measurements yet, we're just trying to determine whether the stations are 8 feet apart or 4 feet apart or some other sensical, round number.

2. US BoGP drawings were commonly, originally drawn in 1/192 scale (1/16 inch = 1 foot) and that's what this drawing states is the original scale, 1/16 inch = 1 foot, in the table at the bottom right corner.

3. Let's pick a usable length of the ship to check, say 20 stations.

4. So, 20 stations at 4 feet apart = 80 feet on the real ship (20 x 4 feet = 80 feet). Next we need to convert 80 feet into a usable 1/192 scale measurement. For scale modeling purposes, let's shoot for measurements in millimeters because the math is easier in millimeters.

5. To get 80 feet in 1/192 scale in millimeters, here's the math: 80' x 12 inches per foot x 25.4 mm per inch divided by our scale of 192 = 127 mm.

6. Using a digital caliper, let's measure 20 stations on the scan of the drawing. If 20 stations measures 127 mm, the scan of the drawing is accurately 1/192 scale.

But let's say that using a digital caliper, 20 stations on the drawing only measures 101.6 mm. No worries, we can correct the scan. Take 127 (the correct number we want) and divide it by 101.6 (the actual number we measured). We get 1.25. That means that the drawing should be enlarged 1.25 times (125%) to be properly scaled to 1/192 scale.

7. Using whatever graphic software you have on your computer or printer, enlarge the scan 125%. Then print it and check it again to make sure 20 stations measures 127 mm.

To check for distortion, check the stations at different points along the graphic scale and make sure they all measure the same 127 mm. In other words, 20 stations at the bow and 20 stations at the stern should both measure 127 mm. If they don't match, the original drawing is distorted. That can be corrected, too, but requires some more mathematical gymnastics.

Once you have the scan at a correct scale, you can resize it to any scale you want.

Hope this helps.

It's way too early in the morning for math, Steve... :no_2:

But thanks for that explanation!
