We're pleased to announce two separate designs for accurate 3D-printed islands for USS Yorktown CV-5 and USS Enterprise CV-6 as they appeared at the Battle of Midway are complete. [edit: Hornet CV-8 is now available, too!]They are available now in 1/487 scale for your Revell Yorktown class aircraft carrier models, including the recently produced "Battle of Midway Carrier" kit. They will be made available in 1/350 for your Trumpeter
Hornet kit and later in 1/700 (for Trumpeter, SkyWave/Pit-Road, Mini Hobby Models and HP-Models), 1/719 scales (for Tamiya) and 1/600 for classic Aurora.

Scale: the box of the Revell kits is sometimes erroneously labeled as 1/542 scale , 1/400 scale, 1/490 scale or 1/480 scale. The true scale of the model kit, when compared to measurements drawn on official US Navy blueprints of the actual ship, is 1/487 scale, This island is precisely scaled for your Revell kit.

To fit this island to your Revell kit's flight deck, please remove the raised locator strips on the Revell kit's flight deck part #43. A simple cuticle cutter can cleanly and easily remove these raised locator features.
The Classic Warships Publishing USS Yorktown book is a highly recommended reference to help with your model.As with any first-time product release, a Shapeways print engineer may decide some feature may be too thin to survive the cleaning process and cancel the first order, refunding your money. If that happens, NO WORRIES, Shapeways will immediately notify me and I'll adjust the product design later this week and make it available for reordering.
Some part cleanup will be necessary. The 3D printing process uses a waxy substance to support certain part features. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners. Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.
During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light. Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured. Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin.
Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended. Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.
