Model Monkey 5"/54 Mk.42 Mounts
We are very pleased to announce that the designs for 5"/54 Mk.42 Mounts, installed aboard many US Navy and allied warships, are complete and uploaded to Shapeways. Both double and single "frog-eye" dome versions are, or can be made, available.
They are available now in 1/96, 1/320 (Revell Forrest Sherman class DDs), 1/350, 1/542 (Revell Forrestals) and 1/600 scales (Airfix, Aurora, Heller, MPC, and Monogram Forrestals and Airfix Ltjens-Class Rommel). Other scales are possible.

To assemble the model, insert the cannon, barrel first, through the open bottom into the gun slot
Features:
- overall dimensions from official US Navy drawings
- separate cannon and trunnion to allow the modeler to set the barrel at any realistic elevation from +85 deg. to -15 deg. just like the real mount.
- one or two detailed "frog-eye" local fire control domes (right for antiaircraft, left for surface firing)
- properly scaled hatches with hinge details
- access plates with hex-head bolt details
Here are some closeups of the double "frog-eye" dome design:
Some part cleanup will be necessary. The 3D printing process uses a waxy substance to support certain part features. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners. Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.
During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light. Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured. Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin.
Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended. Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.
