Happy to announce we've begun preliminary design work to produce an accurate cockpit for the classic Bandai 1/24 scale Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai. The Shiden-Kai ("Violet Lightning") was employed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War Two. The design will get our full attention once our 1/32 scale Bristol Beaufighter observer's station design is complete.

Fantastic news on the NIK2! I recently inherited one and was disappointed at the total lack of aftermarket support for this handsome aircraft!

Thanks so much!

Happy to announce nameplates for all four World War I-era Nassau-class battleships of the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy) have been added to the catalog.
The nameplates complement the Modellbau Ray 1/700 scale SMS Nassau kit.

The four nameplates feature raised lettering in Fette deutsche Schrift font and include a decorative nautical rope border. Nameplates are available from Shapeways in inexpensive, paintable acrylic plastic or your choice of real metals including brass, bronze, silver, gold-plated brass and rhodium (platinum)-plated brass.

The Nassau-class ships were Germany's first true dreadnoughts and were very active during World War I operations against British and Russian forces. At the battle of Jutland, SMS Nassau participated in the sinking of British cruiser HMS Black Prince. All four ships survived the war and were broken up in the early 1920s.

Night fighter fans! We are happy to announce early World War Two-era Airborne Interception Radar Mk.IV equipment sets are now available to detail your 1/48 scale Bristol Beaufighter, de Havilland Mosquito, Douglas Boston, Douglas Havoc Turbinlite, Douglas P-70 Nighthawk (A-20 Havoc variant) and PV-1 Ventura kits. A painting and installation guide is also available for free download. Sets are available in 1/32 scale, too.

The AI Mk.IV radar was produced by EMI, Pye and EKCO in the United Kingdom. It was also built under license by Western Electric in the US, fit to Beaufighters and P-70s operated by US forces. In US service, it was known as the SCR-540.

The set of 5 models was designed from de-classified Royal Air Force AI Radar Mk.IV equipment manual S.D. 0165 (1) dated July, 1942.

"Radar, Airborne Interception, Mark IV, or AI Mk. IV for short, was the world's first operational air-to-air radar system. Early Mk. III units appeared in July 1940 on converted Bristol Blenheim light bombers, while the definitive Mk. IV reached widespread availability on the Bristol Beaufighter heavy fighter by early 1941. On the Beaufighter, the Mk. IV arguably played a role in ending the Blitz, the Luftwaffe's night bombing campaign of late 1940 and early 1941." - Wikipedia.

The depictions of the Mk Vi director shown appear correct for:

King George V class battleship HMS Anson as she appeared after her 1944-1945 refit
Minotaur class cruisers HMCS Ontario and HMS Superb
the twenty-four "Ch" , "Co" and "Cr" class destroyers
some Tribal class destroyers (the last four RCN ships only)
the first sixteen (not just the first eight) Battle class destroyers
the four Weapon class destroyers

I don't think any aircraft carriers were fitted with this system.

The Daring class ships carried a modified director, with the nacelles for the Type 275 radar fitted higher on the director, as shown in the photo of HMS Daring.

Those look cool! Being that the rear cockpit of the AMT P-70 is pretty sparse, I hope some more goodies to dress it up will come along!

Thank so much fellas!

Yes, I think so too, that P-70 kits would certainly benefit. Other than a lack of detail, the classic AMT kit has "good bones". It and other Havoc variants can be built into fine models. The large canopies cry out for more cockpit detailing. The Model Monkey radar set ought to help.

TJ, thanks for the HACS info. PM sent.

Beaufighter observer station news!

We're going to release two 1/32 scale Beaufighter observer/radar operator stations for Revell kits in May.
Nearing completion are an early version for Mk.I day and night fighters, and a late version for Mk.VI, TF Mk.X and Mk.21.
The instrumentation for each version is in design now.

Bristol Beaufighters were powerful heavy fighters and maritime strike aircraft carrying four 20 mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 Mk.III cannons in the belly. Early Beaufighter 20 mm cannons were drum-fed. Drums were limited to 60 rounds. Once the ammunition in the drum was expended, the observer/radar operator had to manually change the drums in flight from racks of spare drums on each side of the fuselage interior. This awkward rearming procedure changed with late Beaufighters whose cannons were fed from belts drawn from very large, boxy ammo bins, one bin for each cannon, fixed to the floor above the guns. This change freed the observer/radar operator to focus on his primary mission functions.

Both models will include an upper fuselage insert with ribs, stringers and instruments. The early version model will include the ammo drums and racks.

Below are renderings of the early version fuselage insert design with its conspicuous spare ammo drums, racks and large dorsal hatch opening, at about 95% complete. Some of what you see here will change as the design is further refined and detailed for excellent accuracy. The late model is similar but without the racks and drums. A rendering of the late station with bins is shown in an earlier post.

Early and late cockpits, a torpedo, radar equipment and dihedral tailplanes are available now.

Hey Steve, do you have 1/350 Ranger island? Maybe I could use the Indy island without the sposons for the radar. Thanks

Here are the 2 mm blocks. They are tiny! The holes for rope are just 0.3 mm in diameter.

What size blocks would you recommend for a 1/64 scale USS Niagara?

I only have the one sailboat, so I have never tried to rig a sailing ship. No experience here...

Thanks for your interest!

I regret to say that I am not familiar with the design or specific rigging characteristics of USS Niagara so I am not able to answer your question. You might consider asking your question on the main board. There are likely to be some rigging subject matter experts there who can help.

Thanks again!

Happy to announce an updated superstructure for USS Pennsylvania BB-38 as she appeared on 7 December 1941 is now available in 1/700 scale. The update includes the forward tripod and other detailing.

Also happy to announce an Essex class SCB-125 island for USS Hornet CVS-12 is now available in 1/700 scale. The island is in Hornet's Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronaut recovery missions configuration.
