We would like to introduce ourselves to the ship modeling community. Tru-Color Paint is a manufacturer of model paint for over 10 years. During this time we developed over 400 colors for the model railroad and over 100 colors for the model automobile markets. On Oct. 1, 2017 we will enter the model military market with the release of 14 colors - 6 for U.S. Navy ships and 4 each for U.S. Army (AFV's) and U.S. Air Force (SEA - 4 colors). :wave_1:

Our intent is to add 4-10 colors per month thereafter until the end of 2019. By that time we will have produced over 200 colors for the military market in all branches. For the U.S. Navy we will have all of the camouflage colors (over 45) from 1939 to 1946 matched to color chips supplied by Randy Short of Snyder & Short. This includes the majority of the grays, blues, browns and greens used by the U.S. Navy on ships as well as airplanes so you may model any ship and/or plane with accurate colors. We will also have all of the modern navy colors for ships and aircraft.

The first release will be as follows: TCP-1000 Norfolk 65-A Anti-fouling Red; TCP-1001 Dull Black # 82; TCP-1002 Navy Gray # 5; TCP-1004 White 5-U; TCP-1009 Mahogany and TCP-1007 Navy Blue 5-N. All will be available in 1 oz. ( $ 5.69 list) and 2 oz. ( $ 10.25 list) size bottles. You may get these from your favorite hobby store or directly from us.

Tru-Color Paint is a solvent based paint that dries in 30-60 minutes, depending on ambient temp. and humidity. It adheres very well to plastic and wood models. All paint products are manufactured in Phoenix, AZ  . The TCP-1000 series paints are all intended to be applied with an air brush and each color is air brush ready without thinning. If thinning is wanted, suggest using TCP-015, Thinner, as it is produced with the same blend of solvents used in the manufacture of our paint. We suggest spraying at 28-35 PSI.

Clean up is easily accomplished with acetone (unscented nail polish remover - do not use the water type). Please, do not use acetone to thin Tru-Color Paint - it dries too fast and may cause the paint to blush or give a rough surface.

Please contact us if you have any questions or comments. We are pleased to add the military paint to our ever increasing lines or model paint product lines.

Always interested and happy to see new companies catering to accurate paints. You mention yours are solvent based. Are they enamels or lacquers?

Devin:

Thank you for your message. Tru-Color Paint is neither an enamel nor a lacquer. It is in a category all by itself. We use a blend of solvents with an acrylic polymer to achieve a paint mix that allows the modeler to spray the model from the bottle without the need to add thinner and achieve a smooth finish. It is also nearly impossible to have a "run" with Tru-Color Paint. The acrylic polymer allows us to have a very fine grind of the pigments used and it gives the painted layer flexibility for R/C models. One coat is usually sufficient to get an opaque appearance with any color. We recommend spraying at 28-35 PSI with a medium tip.

Tru-Color Paint adheres very well to plastic models as well as wood, Lexan and some metal surfaces WITHOUT the need for any special preparation (other than making sure the surface is clean). For brass and similar metals, we suggest etching the brass and priming for best adhesion.

Clean up of the air brush (or paint brush if that is used with our TCP-800 series paints) equipment is easily accomplished with acetone (unscented nail polish remover - but do not use the water type). Do NOT use acetone to thin Tru-Color Paint. It dries too fast and may cause the paint to blush or give a rough finish. If you need to thin our paint use TCP-015, Thinner, as it is produced with the same blend of solvents used in the manufacture of our paint.

Trust this answers your question and then some.

Uwe:

Thank you for your reply. We will start releasing the USN colors on Oct. 1, 2017 and then will add 2-4 colors each month. We have them scheduled out to the end of 2018. Our intent is to release them in groups that makes sense. That is colors for 1941, 1942, etc., but there so many greens & browns that it is going to be spread out so as not to overwhelm our distributors nor the hobby shops that carry our paint lines.

Of the 45+ colors on our list (and yes that is our website) about 40 of them have already been matched. If there is something you need for a project and we have it already, we can accommodate an order for 1 or 2 oz. bottles of that color, even though it has not been officially released. Let us know what we can do to service your paint needs.

Have you tested it on the Shapeways products?

JC:

Thank you for your question. Just answered a similar question on another forum. We have not tried our paint on Shapways products. As we understand, Shapeways has 3D plastic models. If it is the same resin that was used on 3D printed Darth Vader helmets and other items we painted at the Hobby Town show in Omaha last year our paint will adhere very well. We hand brushed some helmets in black, red, green and white with out automobile paint, allowed it to dry for about 30 minutes and you could not rub off the paint. We still have 1 of the painted helmets (looks scary - bright red eyes), we could send you a picture if wanted.

We'll see if we can get any scraps of Shapeways products and test our paint.

Great news! From your description it sounds like your paint is formulated like MRP or MR PAINT brands. They are also acrylic lacquers and it sounds like your paint behaves like theirs. That's great news for the model ship community. Also good news for us in the US that you're based in Phoenix. Welcome to the community. I hope your product does well and I'll look forward to trying it.

Dave:

Thank you for the reply. Tru-Color Paint strives to make the best, most accurate paint on the market for the modeler. From the response we have been getting from the forums we have messages on, it seems that our new military paint line is just what the modeler needs.

We are looking forward to all of the modeling community to try our product.

The FLHS has started carrying your paints. They only have a subset of your catalog and all train colors. But I picked up some and tried them and I'd like to try more.

I have a couple of questions. You offer two codes that are listed as Deck Blue 20-B 1941: 1010 and 1017. What is the difference between these two?

You have a code TCP-017 described as flat. Is this a flat sealer or is this something you add to your paints to get a flat effect?

Thanks

Who is FLHS as we would like to send them literature on our military line as well ? Whoever they are they are getting product from one of our distributors (we have 7 in the U.S.and 1 in Canada) rather than from us as the name is not familiar.

Thank you for your comments as we guarantee the entire Tru-Color Paint product line to be accurate and easy to use.

TCP-1010 is Deck Blue 20-B for all ships built or repainted from 1942 to 1945 while TCP-1017 is Deck Blue 20-B for ships built in 1941 and early 1942.

We offer 3 finishes for the modeler: TCP-014 is a Satin, TCP-017 is a Flat (or some call it Matte) and TCP-018 is Gloss. All are intended to be applied by air brush over the finished model to seal any decals, etc.

Trust this answers your questions and you may order any paint directly from us. We stock all colors in 1 oz. (30 ml) and 2 oz. (60 ml) size bottles.
