I just released the first set of 1/700 US Navy boats for model ships, a 14ft punt.

Such small boats were carried by battleships and large carriers prewar and early war, usually until replaced by rafts. Both Lexington and Saratoga, and most likely all 8 battleships in Pearl Harbor had 1-2 such 14ft punts. These were used for harbor work, maintenance, and similar small duties.

A set of 6 boats is available through shapeways over my shop:

In the next few days, I expect to roll out even more boats, most likely a 36ft motor launch as the next.

I just released a second of the boats

36ft motor launch, based on the Bu.N. 364561 drawing set.
You will need to source a propeller, a bit of railing, and a wire to make a tiller. Optionally a pair of life rings.

Just uploaded a 36ft motor launch modified for harbor service, with extra deck and a tarpaulin. The original on photo has "NYP..." letters, so I would assume it is a New York port modification for cargo transport. Would be a common thing most likely.

Wow. These designs are rolling out really fast.
Just realized from all of these boats, Iowa and Sodak classes used only 26" whaleboat without canvas (these 2 ar of my interest).

So, when your designer runs out of USN boats, I suggest a switch to IJN and KM boat lines. :cool_2:

Thanks! My designer wants some money to get xmas gifts for his kids, so rolls out the boats at fast pace.

Prewar ships had lots of the boats, but in 42-43 lost them - they freed lots of deck area and top weight (a motorboat or a launch was easily 10-20 tons! Plus cranes and other gear - one to one replacement with quad bofors usually possible). Most ships later in the war had only a pair of motor whalers, which was a logistics hell for shore leave on big ships! Try ferry 3000 men off with a pair of 50 seat whalers ;) Something which was ok in the wartime (not much shore leave there), but postwar replaced back by some boats.

I just uploaded 40ft motor boat in two variants. One has the rear canopy back and doors open, one has them closed, as seen in the Navsource pictures of Maryland.

If you want a simple upscale, then I can do it very fast for you, just tell me which ones you need. A redesign would take a few days.

Yeah, I haven't mentioned that my thoughts were about late war (WWII) Missouri and Alabama.
On the drawings I have there is only 1 26" whaler on Missouri and 3 26" whalers on Alabama.
Seems so weird compared to other navies of the time.
At some point I thought they might have had some kind of storage for ships boats like the Yamato and Musashi.

Well, the reason is easy:
50ft motor launch had the hoisting weight of 23300 lb. Plus cradle, crane, davit, etc weight. Mk.2 Quad bofors is nearly identic, Navweaps give it as 23200 to 23800 lb. Plus Director/Gun Tub structure.

35ft motor boat is 12250 lb, exact match for an Mk.1 twin bofors (9800-13000lb)

Crew rescue was easier performed with rafts and floater nets, which were much lighter per person carried and much more compact (railing bins, vertical walls for stowage). Boats were also slow to hoist down, and cranes were a great shell catcher and easily put out of action by splinters, reducing boat efficiency when the ship is sinking after combat. Rafts and nets would just swim up, and easily available to survivors

It was probably also considered, that in a safe harbor, boats, tugs and lighters could carry supplies and bring men to shore leave. These could be brought in by auxiliaries. On the frontline, an additional quad AA gun would be much more useful.

Also, look at the plans of for example USS Arizona (http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/bo ... 350-02.jpg) Most area midships is occupied by the boats. No place for additional AA at all. Bow and tail are not optimal as these are affected by water and gases from main guns.

If you need a set for a specific ship, we would gladly bring out such set for you! Just tell me how many boats of which type you need. Any other scale is always possible.

I spent a few hours looking though photos. Not in a single one I could see the 20ft dingies really carried, so I prepared a set of boats for Yorktown/Enterprise without them.
