Pontos/Lighthouse-Models 25001R1 - 1/250 Antarctica Observation Ship "SOYA" The Third Antaractica Observation Corps.
This is the first full kit released by Pontos Model of South Korea, and introducing their associated new brand Lighthouse Model.

The kit is a beautifully crisp injection moulded plastic kit, with a full Pontos Model detail-up set included within the box and the two intrinsically designed for each other from the outset. You get one full-colour instruction manual, 7 injection moulded trees, 6 sheets of photo-etched brass plus a photo-etched steel name plate in English or Japanese, 3 cast resin parts and 2 metal propellers (screws), 1 wooden deck laminate, 224 turned brass parts and a sheet of Cartograph printed decals.

Soya is the second most famous ship in Japan, but unlike the most famous (the battleship Yamato) the Soya was a research vessel. The kit includes tracked snow vehicle, helicopters and DHC-2 Beaver floatplane carried on board.

This product contains everything you could want to make a first-class model apart from tools and consumables.

Wow, that looks impressive. I've always wondered why folks like Pontos (also InfiniModel, KA, etc) didn't just make the whole kit, since in many cases they're replacing everything but the most basic components such as the hull and deck. Actually they mostly do replace the decks too... This is kind of the answer... (I realize that injection moulding tooling is a different animal.) I don't have much interest in this particular ship, but I could definitely do some others this way.

I understand this is just the first kit from Mr Keumho Kim :) I think the next may be aimed at volume sales worldwide to pad out the company bank account, but this should be the start of some very attractive kits :cool_1:

That's a very enticing hint...

why the odd 1:250 scale? Why not 1:200 or 1:192? why such a esoteric subject?

I would get it had it been 1:200 or 1:192.

No idea, but we've sold out already and need to restock.
