One thing I wondered, though, was if the bow bollards and fairleads for the Aoba are included?

They are slightly different from the Kinugasa (and Kako, and Furutaka).

I am now budgeting to buy a set of these (maybe two), and sell my Rainbow super-detail set, so that I can do the Kinugasa and Aoba in 1942 (technically I’ll eventually need to do the Kako and Furutaka as well).

But just wondering about the bow fairleads.

Hi Matthew,

I checked my set and there is just one version of the bow bollards/fairleads, part #48 as can be seen on the second photo at the previous page. It seems to be somewhere in between of Kinugasa and Aoba as the "dip" between the bow chrysantemum and the fairleads seems to me less pronounced than on the drawing from Maru Special #38 posted by Dan K in the CASF thread for Kinugasa but not as straight as for Aoba. That means it should be fairly easy to modify it to represent either ship. In fact, I think the difference would be minimum in 1/700 anyway, perhaps two swipes of a file on each side ;) .

I think I found out that it is easier to make the bow fairleads for these "classes" (Kinugasa/Aoba, Kako/Furutaka) out of styrene than it is to us PE. The PE part can be used as a template on a piece of .01" styrene, that can then be sanded to .005" really easily, and it will adhere to the hull more strongly than the PE using Weldene or Bondene (can’t recall which is used on styrene).

But I think Dan K also posted drawings of the Kako/Furutaka fairleads as well. I have the models for all of them, but building has been really slow since losing the use of my left arm. I’ve found workarounds by working on really small ships and boats without many parts (less to screw up). But I have yet to get my desk in shape to get back to larger ships (very frustrating, since I now have all the time I want to work on them).

I plan to buy this set as soon as I get through the Holidays. It is hard to pass up.
