On a side note, I recently stumbled upon a seller on aliexpress which makes 3D-prints of some of the fictional ships from WoWS - for instance this model of the German battleship "Pommern". Interestingly (and perhaps questionably) they have chosen to print all of the rails on the model - somewhat like what Modellbauray does but with the entire ship.

I suspect the reason they and Modellbauray print railings is they go for this middle market between injection mouldings or resin that require PE and assembly and basic injection moulding or resin. May be they have insight into what majority want - build a ship, but not use PE, and make it look realistic without all the work. Hence unfortunate side effect of chosen medium, the resin masts that look like curly hair and barrels that curve up sometimes, overscale railings and so on - or said parts super brittle, glass like.

The amount of work needed to modify 3D design of a stolen work from video game is probably beyond their commitment (when talking about those who steal WoW and WT files, or do they really steal them if they are in free acces?).

What I as a consumer of higher end models and who can afford to spend 100+ USD per model would prefer though for that money, is a super accurate 3D printed in resign full hull ship, that has the fine parts like masts, radars, and barrels in brass; And with decks modified to take generic railings that would slot right into the decks with attachment points pre fabricated. I am sure this will come.

I am happy that the soviet dreadnoughts are out, like PK or the imperial russian navy dreadnought like Sevastopol or I.Maria. The modified to wazoo PK is a bizzare thing and cool to have on display next to Warspite, Nagato, WeeVee and so on, ships that were old but were made to work in WW2. I hope there is more out there in whatever form, and competition will make them all better.

Such kits are available, e.g. the Taiwanese destroyer De Yang by Orange Hobby, the River class frigate HMS Lagan by Starling Models, the Greek submarine Okeanos and Type 214 by Hellenic Ship Model, or the cruiser submarines USS Narwhale, USS Nautilus, and USS Argonaut by Tom's Model Works. In all of these kits, there are no cast resin parts, but 3D printed resin parts.

I assume that there will be several kind of 3D models for some time:
a) designers, who offers either only the files or their designs to be printed on Shapeways or similar services: no complete kits; can be either only one part or a few parts (e.g. SNAFU or Masters of Military). Here, additional PE, brass parts, decals etc. are necessary, there are no instructions

b) kits containing only 3D printed parts, sometimes instructions - similar to some older resin producers, but only shifted to printing instead of casting the parts

c) high-end kits containing 3D printed parts, PE, brass gun barrels, decals (as the mentioned kits by Orange Hobby, Starling Models, Hellenic Ship Model and Tom's Modelworks - and soon probably L'Arsenal)

As modeler, there is as usual the question, if one is interested in a specific ship (then also a) and b) is fine) or in building certain type of kits (then only c) could be interesting).

SS models now have the USN cruisers Pensacola, Northampton, and Portland all 1942 fit on the 30-day preorder list. The ones currently shown come with a lower hull since the product number has an S at the end. The graphics of each also show full hull. They are expensive at $109.99 each. The drawings look very good, but there are no photos yet of the printed parts. You have to look under the presale list to see them. They also have in preorder Zara and Pola models as well as the Indian cruiser Mysore (ex HMS Nigeria). The Mysore is now available, waterline and full hull versions, and there are photos of the printed parts.

Pensacola https://www.ebay.com/itm/166013075782?h ... Sw1t9kM5jw
Northampton https://www.ebay.com/itm/166013075127?h ... Sw~xRkM5kD
Portland https://www.ebay.com/itm/166013074626?h ... SwAZRkKotr Portland will have PE for degaussing cable.
Pola https://www.ebay.com/itm/165971176458?h ... SwNhpkI~9q
Zara https://www.ebay.com/itm/165971169725?h ... Sw7llkBvfS
Mysore https://www.ebay.com/itm/165890226862?h ... SwwGRkI~wk

I saw that and have Preordered a pair of Portlands and Pensacolas.

Thinking about the Northamptons, even though I have nearly a complete set of Northamptons from one of the older makers of the kits (I cannot recall the name, but they are very good kits).

I would hope that they offer a version with PE for many of the details they show 3D Printed to allow for a better scale appearance, especially of Handrails and Splinter Shielding/Bulwarks.

But it is about time someone produced some newer kits for these.

I just wonder if we will ever see them in Plastic for the Early-War outfits.

Kits of the Northampton class are available (or at least had been available) by Corsair Armada (including several early versions) and Niko Models.

The kits I had bought from the above mentioned producer include only 3D printed parts. I assume that the mentioned kits also include only 3D printed parts (but I do not know it for sure).

That is who my Northamptons are from.

He produces really decent kits.

I have all of the Northamptons produced by Corsair Armada, which includes all of them, I believe (there were only six, were there not?).

Although I only got three of them directly from Corsair Armada (Chicago, Houston, and Northampton).

At Shapeways 1/700 USS Pueblo (AGER-2):

https://www.shapeways.com/product/SMAPK ... arketplace

Shapeways now offers a 'new' material, Gray Fine Detail Plastic (GFD). I ordered Pueblo in this material, which may be more stable than their Smooth Fine Detail. SFD 'frosts' and requires cleaning and UV-light treatment at the customer end, at least in my experience. I don't like SFD, but that is just me. I have the Pueblo in GFD, it feels more like traditional resin castings, and I haven't done any 'processing' to it, and it hasn't powered or melted, at least not yet. It has been about a week now since I got it, so I'm hoping for the best.

That is my go-to for checking things like that.

I am hoping soon to see about getting copies of the negatives for many of the photos on Navsource, and then running them through newer AIs for “cleaning” such images, and increasing the resolution.

I saw a demo of one where the tools are much like the Retopologizing tools for 3D modeling, where you can draw on the photo (at varying degrees of precision) where you know certain details or artifacts would be, so the photo-processing algorithms can then include that in the cleaned/restored photo.

Like the AI Art Apps, you can also provide it with Reference Images (such as “This is the çrane that would be in this location” or “These are the Paravanes that would be hanging on this bulkhead”) to include certain items in the photos.

I am really hoping that the surviving IJN photos can be cleaned-up and resolution increased dramatically with these.

But…

I got now also several models printed in that way:

Here, two models by Brown Water Navy Miniatures printed in Gray Fine Detail Plastic quality in 1/700:

Dutch Atjeh class cruiser and Ottoman Avnillah class armoured corvette.

The quality looks better than the old Smooth Fine Detail.

Maxim, I agree with you - quality does look better than the 'frosted' material. Now I'm hoping for material stability.

And: GFD is slightly cheaper than SFD, and better quality. Steps in the right direction :)
