Another model I am thinking of buying is the Tamiya 1/700 Scharnhorst. I understand it is in the post channel dash period any advise on modification or paint schemes?

I recommend A.Bonomi book on Scharnhorst, I have a digital version and it was a huge help in building my 1/700 1943 Scharnhorst (in the as sunk paint scheme). the book includes different version descriptions and its well worth the price for what you get.
