Well if it's as nice as their Wasp class then it should be pretty good.

I've pre-orderd one. This is only the second time I've bought a new release without hesitation. The first was the Trumpeter 350 Essex. I figure when such a long awaited and popular demand is met, you just have to buy it....... I'll see that :woo_hoo: and raise you :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

What a great thing to wake up to this morning!! An email from Freetime notifying me that Intrepid is real and on the way. :woo_hoo:

Pre-Order Complete!

All production lines at my shipyards have stopped to crank up the aircraft factories to produce an airwing for her!

She will be Hancock CVA-19 with CVW-21 (1965-1966) or Ticonderoga CVW-19 (1966-1967) I have done decals for both airwings so I need to pick. Finally, something gets released in Plastic before I build from scratch or do a resin kit!

I can't wait. :cool_2:

Could you please post that article or at least just the photos? I'm very intrigued now and I'm sure others would love some inspirational material to drool over as well :thumbs_up_1:

will do I have scanned the drawing into PDF which shows the major changes he did.. Send me a PM with email and I will forward... will work on the photos.. Thought I had both parts of the article if any one has both please chime in. The issues were scale ship modeler DEC 1993 and Jan 1994... It was called en-route to Yankee Station.. it had the intrepid, and LST MEDIVAC Ship, couple of ADDAMS Class DDG's sitting in port it was done in 1/700 using Waterline kits.. it's a first class job done by Ray Bean :thumbs_up_1:

Just ordered mine from Free Time............just can't wait. I do hope we see aftermarket "whales" (A-3 Skywarriors) to round out the airwing.

The hull shape is all wrong!
The hull shape is all wrong!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. You just know somebody was going to say it. :heh: :heh: :lol_pound: :lol_pound:

But anyway, I'm sure it'll be a pretty decent kit. Whatever might be wrong can always be fixed with a bit of patience, persistance, and scratchbuilding. ;)

Trumpeter makes "Whales" for the Nimitz kit. They actually build up quite nicely. I put one on my 1984 CVN-65 Enterprise. They represent the electronic attack version but some sanding/filing takes care of that to make a A-3B out of it. I would expect Gallery to put out supplemental aircraft kits similar to what they did with the LHDs.

Additionally, Corsair Armada puts out F-8 Crusaders, RF-8G Crusaders, and A-4 Skyhawks. They include the dorsal spine for the Skyhawks so that you can build pretty much any version you want. L'Arsenal does a A-1H Spad that is quite nice. They also do 1/400 S-2s which could be made into E-1 Tracers. Maybe we can beg Tony Bunch at L'Arsenal for some 1/350 scale S-2s/E-1Bs to go with Intrepid if Gallery is not doing them.

My hunch - not gospel, mind you, but only an educated guess - is we'll get Intrepid in final/current configuration, which means the stem anchor and other late/final-fit characteristics. I'm basing that hunch on her final/current configuration being the easiest to research, since that's the basis for her as museum ship. (I'm hoping they spare us the alterations made to the ship for museum use, though! I could do without that metal stairwell from the flight deck to the bridge, not to mention the glassed-in suites under the fantail.)

I imagine it probably won't be that difficult to convert to Hancock - the basic configuration will be correct, of course, but the differences between ships will be what drives you around the bend! (she wrote, aiming to build Ticonderoga in 1972).

Once they put the hurricane bow on is there a difference between the long and short hull Essex?

Ask, and you shall recieve! I HAVE PICS! And plenty of them too! I went to the Mad City Modelers Contest in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin today. A gentleman by the name of Mark Karolus (Hope I spelled that right.) brought in a "sample" (For lack of a better term) of the soon to be released Intrepid kit. If I remember from what he said, he is the only one who has a "preliminary kit" and is currently working on it to give feedback to MRC/Gallery and/or others about construction and so forth. His Intrepid was only on "display only". I asked him for permission to take pics and to post them here on MW and he said OK. All pics I took will be posted fully tonight in this thread, though most of them will be links only. I don't know if Mark is a member here on MW or not, but I told him I would be posting here and I hope he visits and can give more feedback about the kit.

Thank You, Mark, for letting me take pics and posting them here to share with others. :wave_1:

Looks pretty nice! I'll let the experts nitpick it  Only observation I can make is the hangar deck is pretty bland. Are there really no interior bulkheads for the hangar? What I mean is the interior of the bulkheads is blank. All you see is the other side of the exterior bulkheads. I hope they didn't leave that out.

I'm really not sure how much detail the hangar deck has as I don't think Mr. Karoles brought a lot of sprues, instructions, or other stuff into the show to display on the table. What you see in the pics is preliminary work that he has done. What you're seeing of construction pics is just a sample to "wet your appetite" so to speak. ;)
