Good day fellow model-ship chums,

for my scratch 1/700 Bretagne 1855 project

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=382477 ( 4 pages so far )

and I have hit a small dilemma ( all forms of dilemma can be overcome ....
... with the font of knowledge in this forum ... :thumbs_up_1:  :wave_1: )

The Bretagne had two external stern-walks aft -- like this; with railings

Attachment:
stern-walk.jpg
stern-walk.jpg [ 465.1 KiB | Viewed 360 times ]

and the particular issue is the stern walk railing-- which is of a pattern not really seen on 20 Century ships
ie 20 Century ships PE frets-- so I am looking for something with vertical CLOSE-set ' uprights' only
The source PE does not have to be a railing -it could be a radar/grille/slats fro something not marine as well
-I can cut things down and adapt--but it does need to be fine

any ideas?

on my 1/700 Vladimir Monomakh 1885 model

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... /index.htm

I cut the sternwalk out of 1/700 GMM Titanic ratlines--effective ...--but not as fine as I desire now

Hi EJ -thank you fro the response

... trouble is... the ladder sets ( such as some ABER that I have ) are wide enough....--

==> but the rungs are not close enough to be convincing--even in 1/700

Here are images of a model ( by Karl ) and plans thereof of 'Napoleon ' -- a very close contemporary ship
and an illustration thereof--

and from this excerpt of a paintig of Bretagne one/ you ( :cool_2: ) can deduce the density of railing I desire..

Maybe this is one of those cases where, to use your own words, less is more? Maybe some 1/1200 PE has the density required, but surely would exceed the maximum thinness acceptable to you.

Perhaps lean in on the painting, where the entire balustrade is covered in that very charming crimson curtain?

What about North Star Model's stern walks PE? It's a bit crude but worth checking

Ahoy there Jim

Another try:
Check this PE set by Starling Models:
https://starling-models.co.uk/collectio ... iorama-set

Especially the fence part

Or this one (this currently out-of-stock, but...):
https://starling-models.co.uk/collectio ... ern-fences

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Rui

Looked through my spares box, the torpedo net shelving from Tom's 1/700 Mikasa detail set stood out. The verticals might even be too closely spaced and I can tell you from experience that the parts distort if a hummingbird flies past (or when my clumsy, old fingers get involved.) Have no idea how to post photos being technologically challenged as I am-sorry.

@ YOON G
Thank you very much for your suggestion- :thumbs_up_1:
- I have that set-- ...and while North Star were able to make extremely fine PE sets ( for example for 1/700 cruiser Novik,

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... /index.htm

sadly the French stern rail PE set of 2012 was alas indeed pretty crude--
had the PE been executed with more finesse it could be very useful...

@ Rui.... Starling Models modern Diorama that is outside the box thinking!! :thumbs_up_1:
--as the 'fence-only' set is out of stock...

( I want it NOW !!)

I have bought the diorama frets ( 4 of to give me enough rail fencing ) --

chopped down , the fence will do nicely :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

( x 4 !=> the guard's Huts can make small wheelhouses etc and I might need a pigeon or ships dog... )

at this stage - I am beside myself with joy.... :wave_1:

Hi Jim.

How about these 1/700 PE sets used for external platform walkways on IJN ships?

Thank you Greg for the input :thumbs_up_1:

-- the idea and concept is good,

however the Rainbow PEthat you liknked to
the walkway platforms width is not as wide as the railing should be high if that makes sense (!?!)

and even if it was....

alas the platform ' floor boards ' are twice as wide as the upright stanchions are high
of the railing pictured

I believe the Starling models 'fence' -when cut down should give a close enough impression of the real thing
of shape, layout and frequencyy of upright stachions as well as ' thin-ness ' ( finesse )

:wave_1: cheers JB
