I visited Portsmouth Naval Museum on 9th July to view HMS Hood's bell. It is shown alongside the bell from HMS Prince of Wales. Very poignant.
How and when was PoW's bell recovered? Also can someone advise where these bells were positioned on these ships ?

Hi Arthur,

This was one of three bells on HMS Hood - but it was the "most important" having been passed down from the pre-dreadnought battleship Hood, to Rear-Adm Sir Horace Hood who was lost at Jutland when Invincible blew up, and then to the battlecruiser Hood by Lady Hood, Adm Hood's widow, as you would have seen from the inscription on the bell. This one was mounted on a mobile stand.

There is also a documentary on the story of the bell's recovery ("For Years Unseen") - for those who may not have seen it:

As far as Prince of Wales' bell is concerned, according to Wikipedia:

Quote:
The ship's bell was manually raised in 2002 by British technical divers with the permission of the Ministry of Defence and blessing of the Force Z Survivors Association. It was restored, then presented for display by First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Alan West, to the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool. The bell has been since moved to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth for display in the Hear My Story Galleries.

Can't say where either was located when each ship was sunk.

Hope to some day be able to see those bells with my own eyes, as you have done!

Paul
