Is Merit sneaking one in under the radar? Looks to be a 1/350th scale USS Hornet. Merit listed as manufacturer. From the Shizuoka show report here: http://www.themodellingnews.com/2017/05 ... .html#more

Surprised to see this, as when talking with them while working on the Yorktown and Enterprise kits, they stated a Hornet would not be done. If they've left that tanker hull design of the Trumpy Hornet in the past, this could be fantastic news for the upcoming 1/700 and 1/200 scale Yorktown class kits they've announced.

My thoughts exactly Bob! Been looking at photos and there are significant differences. I guess when the time comes we can work that out in the CASF thread.

My only frustration with Flyhawk - in a good way - is they take SO LONG between their new kits!

Any indication of when Penelope is to be released?

According to flyhawk information at Shizuoka hobby show hms penelope is due in July. Prince of Wales is due in August.

I found the information on a chinese site that has pictures from flyhaws booth at Shizuoka.

Is the Tamiya Prince of Wales really that bad that people would prefer the Flyhawk version? No one seems to have answered a question I made at the King George V class battleships thread about it.

Ive not idea if its bad or good. Its a waterline series - so itslike missing bottom half of the ship and as such, a no go for me. I only build full ships. To me the weathered hull underneath is part of the attraction. If someone came out with 3D printed lower hull pars for Sharnhorst, KGV and so on I wouldnt care about flyhawk versions...

It's not that Tamiya POW is that bad. Thirty-five years ago it was a great model; currrently, it's a little dated but still looks pretty nice - especially with AM updates. But Flyhawk's will be light-years ahead of Tamiya's. Might cost more (for sure!), but Tamiya's with mentioned AM will cost almost the same as Flyhawk's OOB!

By today standards Tamiya's 35+ years release are not good for even an out of the box build.

Not to mention the lower hull half is missing - lazy. Give me an option, not take it away!:)

I wouldn't complain too much, the effort they put into a kit is worth the wait, it has all the etch and brass you would ever need plus exquisitely fine moulded injection parts and all for a reasonable price. I'm not sure we would appreciate them coming out quicker if they botched the research or softened the detail, forcing the use of aftermarket products.

At least we have something to look forward to Penelope, Prince of Wales, Illustrious plus the Ajax & Achilles and the British Destroyers or alternately there are the German light Cruisers too

Some were better than others; POW and KGV are still not bad (with PE and AM), same with Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Tamiya's smaller ships like destroyers were terrible. But the large ships certainly could be replaced with newer releases.

I believe it is the 1/200 scale Hornet. Could not get a clear look at the bow. I compared the pics of the tie down strips by the front elevator and the interior of the three round uptakes of the funnel to the 1/200 kit and my 1/350 Yorktown. It is definitely the 1/200 kit. Sorry Devin for my observation but maybe if sales are good for CV- 5 & 6, maybe they will have a change of heart.
