Hi there
are there any informations available why USS San Diego(as other ships of this class) had no Mk51 gun director for the 2 forward (port and starboard) installed 40mm Bofors Twin Mounts installed? I have not find any explanation for this reason, would be interested to knw!

Thanks a lot in advance if someone could let me know
Cheers

René

I don't know what timeframe you are asking about. USS SAN DIEGO, like all her first group sisters had quad 1.1-in mounts, and didn't get twin 40-mm mounts until late 1943. With the twin 40-mm installation, the Mk 51 director was installed above in the bridge wings and is difficult to see in broadside images, Below is an image from another yard period in April 1944, with a better aspect view of the Mk 51 director, next to a signal lamp and forward of the torpedo director.
