The Ukrainians appear to have damaged, possibly seriously (to be confirmed), the Russian submarine support and rescue vessel Kommuna at the Sevastopol naval base in Crimea.

Kommuna, Russia's only 110-year-old ship:

Russia FlagNaval auxiliaries are usually overlooked by casual observers, but in wartime they suddenly return to the centre of attention. Among them, lifeboats are so obscure that they are often forgotten in popular fleet lists (!). But that depends on what you need to salvage! Think Glomar Explorer. Think... Russian Navy Kommuna .

The vintage salvage vessel Kommuna has had a long and sometimes distinguished career. Now 110 years old, she finds herself in active service in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Whether you see her as an elegant old lady or a quaint accident waiting to happen, she is certainly one of the most interesting vessels afloat today.

And she was active during the war. She has been seen off the Crimean coast working with other warships.

It seems likely that any attempt to salvage the wreck of the cruiser Moskva will involve her. Although at the time of writing this article, the fog of war is both literal and figurative, and there is no certainty.

Specifications
Displacement: 3,100 t fully loaded

Well, the Ukraine might then be accused of damaging a piece of antique value! But so have the Russians, damaging several old churches and other buildings in Ukraine over the last two years.

The sat pictures do not show any significant damage.

Funny how these ships are moored! Perpendicular to the quay, and apparently no jettees between the ships. How do they do that and in particular: why?

Or are we looking at some misinformation, aka a hoax?

The ships are using a Mediterranean Moor - online search for "Mediterranean Moor" will produce descriptions of how it is done. It enables more ships to fit a limited length of quayside.

It's a pretty common mooring method for the Russians. Google Map satellite view their naval bases and you'll see it.
