Two questions:
1. What are the impact pads made of on an aircraft carrier? I've read various sources that say it's rubber or it's a steel plate. Which is correct?
2. What is the color of these impact pads? I've seen in photos what appears to be a rust type color and I've also seen variations of grey. I'll be using Vallejo Model Air Color paints to paint these pads for my carrier. Is there a color that comes close? It doesn't have to be exact.

it would appear to be metal & has something to do with the arresting cables.

According to a 2-year-old post on aviation.stackexchange.com these impact pads are polyurethane pads that absorb the slapping shock of the arresting cable to prevent damage to the flight deck. They are replaced every 125 arrested landings. Here are some photos:

They are rubber pads. The brown colour is rust. They aren't painted.

You can see how they go from black to dirty rust in these picks.

Let your artistic side free and dirty them up as much as you want! :big_grin:
