Hi,

I have a DDG-91 model in 3Dmax format. I want to perform finite element analysis for this model so I need to format it into a 'solid' model, is there any way that we can do this?
If I open the file directly in proE, they will only recognize it as a surface.

Thanks,
Robin

I don't think 3D Max does anything but a surface model. These are great for rendering but of little use for solid or mesh modeling. Check your export options and see if you can write it from 3D Max as some other options. IGES usually works best for AutoCAD to Solidworks, but you have to select the proper options or you get only exterior surfaces. To do any FE, you need a mesh.

You need to be careful with this format. I tried to get a rapid prototype model from this format. I had to do alot of work to get it in proper shape. The Polygons tend not to be attached to one another (g1 continuity) usually it is the number of decimal places the software assigns. CAD software is much more refined to assigning continuity (like 12 decimal places). I have to teach this stuff all of the time in my regular job.

I can try and convert the file for you if you wish. What FEA program are you going to run it on? It will help to know how refine of mesh you will need.
