This is a follow-up topic to this one, as I felt we are moving away from discussing the amazing SS Hydrograaf 3d modeled & printed by Pascal/Iceman 29. Not to mention, it would be more useful to have this info collected in its own topic. Basically, I'm looking for help/advice in modelling ship hulls using CAD software. I'm just a hobbyist, who uses CAD mainly for making stuff for 3d print, but recently got interested in ship model making and I would love to learn how to tackle recreating ship hulls for 3d print. The discussion in the above linked topic focused pretty much at importance of using plans and choosing the right boat for your first attempt at hull modelling. It also included a good overview of "Tables of Offsets" by DrPR. My plan is to collect knowledge & resources in this topic to help beginners to all things naval like me. With that in mind, are there any books/articles about the topic that I could look into? --- Resources: Hull Modeling and Naval Architecture with Rhinoceros - I'm personally familiar with Rhino3D, so it is a good starting point for me. |

I find the best way is to create the sections of the ship frame by frame and loft them into a continuous hull form. Attachment: Note I am only doing half as the other side is mirrored to complete after the side is done. |
