Just wondering as I near the completion of a 1/200 heavy cruiser; what type of stand to set it on. What do you guys think?

Usually it's best to consider what kind of stand before starting to build, rather than near the end. For instance, it may be difficult or impossible to mount the ship on brass pedestal type stands (too invasive!). You could still safely measure the contours of the hull with a contour gauge and construct a cradle type stand that will snugly hold the model. The most secure type of stand usually requires drilling holes in the bottom of the hull to pin or bolt the model down, but toward the end of the build it might be just too dangerous to do this. :wave_1:

I would personally go for turned brass columns they look very classy. On a larger model use four (one fore and aft with two slightly slimmer ones under port and starboard bilges). If you need to be able to remove the model from the base then use a combination of columns and brass cradles shaped to match the hull, as I have done with this destroyer.

File comment: The model sits on two shaped brass cradles each mounted on a brass column.

A pedestal type mount like this: http://www.grandbrass.com/ShowItem.cfm? ... tegory=All
looks very nice. Lamp parts resemble real ship stands and are MUCH cheaper. But you do have to drill holes in the bottom of the hull to attach a nut to the top of the brass piece - and you have to do this before gluing down the deck. :wave_1:
