The last time I was trying to work through a water base it was very hard to find rayon cotton balls. (I found some bandages that I could dissect at get at rayon pads - as Chris mentions in his posts rayon is easier to handle than regular cotton.) Thanks to the popularity of electronic cigarettes (don't know, don't care) there's been a revival in sales of rayon fiber. Check eBay under "CelluCotton" and you'll find "wicks" about as thick as your thumb. They come in many different lengths but I think less is more here - I have fifteen feet and it's going to last a long time. Figure around $5 including shipping. (More if you want a few hundred yards. Don't know/care.) The stuff started as a beauty accessory so the new use is new. (Found out that rayon was developed during WWII as an inexpensive and very effective substitute for cotton in bandages.) Oddly, there are some products named "CelluCotton" that are made out of cotton - just look for 100% rayon. It's there and cheap.
