Multi-Layer Chip and Salt WeatheringTest

I recently tried a few weathering techniques - hairspray multi-layer chipping, salting with b/w paint, acrylic vs. enamel, different chipping tools (toothpicks, sponge, etc) and washes and pastels.

I just thought I'd share the results - and since this is my second ship build and first time wreathing - I thought I'd see if there were any other tips!

My favorite panel (center) was 17 steps!

Next step is testing more oil-canning techniques (something it seems most people avoid??). In the pics, you can see where I tried to dremel out the indentations. That didn't look good, so then I tried pressing a heated piece of metal into the plastic. That didn't work. Now I'm going to try shading with a very diluted coat of black enamel.

Black Base coat
Metalizer
Clearcoat
Hairspray
Rust (Molt wet with sponge)
Rust pigments
Clearcoat
Hairspray
Primer (Yellow XF-4)
Chip
Clearcoat
Hairspray
Top Coat (Mix of N-5 shades - dark fading down to light)
Chip
Water
Salt
White (Diluted)
Water
Salt
Black (Diluted)
Pastels and washes for rust

Thanks so much - and I appreciate the tips on oil-canning. I guess its just something people tend to avoid?

Your work is awesome! Great job.

I am going to try your technique with very diluted black on low air pressure to see what happens.
