Hi, Aggie
1 ) I have to find a solution to similar problem with portholes on my HMCS Huron. I found from North Stars model PE parts : 1/350 Porthole (sidescuttles) with visor 1,2 mm size (in clear), but sad is, there are not not in production now.
2) Yes, there exist possible to use simple method how to do portholes. If you see this tutorial from Model Shipwrights
HEREModeler Tailor from Germany used for his MSW Build Contest- Leipzig, 1/400, Full Build only cooper wire a glued it over driled holes.
I found this casually, if i check his tutorial " How to do water base display" in the same link.
Good luck.
