I first want to say thank you for the information. I am still a little confused on the long hull kits in 1/350 (Tyco and Hanna). What is the difference?
Also which nautilus deck is the full deck? Finally I know the 3d guys are working on the new island; what about the bridge upgrades for the intrepid would they make the island reflect the 50's.?

Korean War-era Essex islands are coming but it will be a little while yet. Research is not yet complete. Ray D. Bean has graciously sent some amazing photos to help with that design.

Here are two great references I found and was given.
After some thought I think I will do one in 1/700 first if I can get a trumpeter hancock for less then $30.00. When I do the 1/350 version I really feel the replacement parts for the Intrepid Island will update the island nicely.
Still looking at PE.. think it will be a combo of Tom's and GMM.

Good Morning, I'm new here and new to modeling. Have spent time looking on the internet for Oriskany kits as I rode her in 72 & 73 era. I've read some combinations folks used and my skill level is pretty basic. Eventually would like to get my skill level up and reproduce an excellant model. Suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome. Since Oriskany was part of the Essex class, I moved your post into the Cold War Essex-class thread.

Jim Shirley Productions made a kit of the Oriskany in 1/700 scale, but that is long out of production.

Christoph Mentzel built the kit, you can find it in the gallery here.

Gallery Models makes a 1/350 USS Intrepid with the angled flight deck. If you peruse this thread you may find what you are looking for on how to convert Intrepid to Oriskany. I don't know enough about the class to tell you what would be needed to attempt such a conversion. I'm sure others, much more knowledgeable than I, will chime in.

The other option is to find someone to build it for you. Many folks here like Keith Bender or Ryan Labieniec build on commission and have both build the recent Intrepid kit.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Here is another great photo from Ray Bean. It on his new DVD Straight Deck/MODS. It number 143. It covers all the Essex Class Carriers that did not get the conversion to angle deck carriers. Thank you all for the information on my USS Antietam CV 36 build.
As of now it will be either 54 or 56 configuration. I still working on aircraft mostly the S-2's and Helicopters from that time period. Not sure if any of the 3d guys are planing on doing the SKYRAY and the Dragon fly in 1/350. I know they they make the panthers, cougars and savages. Did I miss any aircraft please let me know.
Thanks

In doing my research for the Antietam Flight deck. It appears to be a wedge added to the regular deck stern to the Port elevator.
So in terms of Modeling the deck in 1/350 ( I will be using the HANCOCK) for the Hull, Island. I am not sure about a replacement wooden deck. I know Nautilus makes great decks. They have two types not sure which would work here (micro thin or regular). As far as the the wedge my thoughts would be use .040 thick styrene. Also not sure about the elevator being enlarged and the forward extension to reflect the correct deck length (Half way over the forward AA guns). Finally regarding Radars, I know most Radars are on the GMM Set. Does anyone make the SX radar and the small Surface Search radars located at each end of the island behind the elevated AA guns?
Thanks

good morning to all. I found a picture took during the mooring of Orinskany after last service voyage in 1974-1975, and it was clearly visible an A6 Intruder...So I need some help about her last cruise: What Wings did she embarked? In the same photo there where Phantoms, and a Crusader, although I always thought she embarked A7 after Vietnam....
Thanks for the help!

Sometimes a carrier would ferry aircraft to or from the mainland US as needed. The ship didn't operate the aircraft but gave it a ride to where it needed to go. That accounts for some of the pictures showing non-typical types on an Essex-class flight deck.

Good day,
The 1/350 Island for the Essex class has been released. It label the Island for CV 16. Take a look.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I have a copy of question when the Princeton and Antietam were re-classified to CVS. Did they get their AA guns removed or replaced. In Ray Bean new DVD #143 which covers these ships. The AA guns are covered in traps the best I can make out. the photos of the uncovered mounts show the small radar dish mounted on Right side. I thought only the 3 inch had this set-up?
Finally I am starting to get my list of items needs to convert the 1/350 Hancock into the Antietam circa 1955-56.
Which aftermarket Quad gun set should be used?
as for the Aircraft it should be S-2 trackers, Seahorse Helo's and Savages. Any other aircraft ?
Thanks

3D-printed 1950s versions of modernized Essex islands are coming for your straight-deck, WWII-era Trumpeter kits.

As you know, there are conspicuous differences between the Korea War-era islands and the Vietnam-era islands. Features of Korean War-era islands versus Vietnam-era islands include:
1) bridge window configuration (soft top)
2) absence of PriFly high and aft
3) absence of the SPN-35 Final Approach Radar and its large dome on the aft end of the island

Photo courtesy Ray D. Bean who is providing considerable assistance in the design of the 1950s-era Essex islands.

A Vietnam-era USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 island is ready in 1/530 and 1/500 scales. Its most conspicuous features include large, boxy radar stations high on the starboard side, unique electrical cabling route, single whistle, and subtle differences to the splinter shield and flag lockers when compared to Intrepid, Shangri La and Lexington.

You know, about four years ago I was rebuilding a Revell kit into Ticonderoga; that project got put on hold (and that model ended up becoming the Hornet build I documented here long ago). Having read this announcement, I couldn't be happier that project got diverted, because now I can start over and not have to worry about the island modifications. Thank you!

Thanks! You can relive the saga here, in all its glory:

Lessons learned here will no doubt inform the Ticonderoga project, if and when it happens.

Sorry about hijacking this thread about the USS Antietam. I get into that research mode. But I have a general question regarding the Essex that when they were re-classified to CVS (Both Straight and Angle Deck Ships) The main aircraft where S2-Tracks and Helicopters. looking at Ray Bean CD I see a few A-4 always parked near the Island. Did the Angle Decks still use the A-3 and E-1 Tracers. What about the Straight deck did they embark the E-1 or the A-3 at any time or just would transport them?
Thanks

Does anyone know how many F8 Crusaders Intrepid carried during her 1967 cruise? I have the Starfighter decal sheet, and Mark has decals for four F8s in 1967. He indicates that these 4 Crusaders supplemented VSF-3, which operated A-4s, as this squadron was responsible for CV-11's air defense. Would that be all the F8s she carried in 1967 - just 4?

Which leads to a 2nd question - how many A-4s did she carry in 1967, and was there more than one A-4 squadron on board (one fighter, one attack?), or did the Skyraiders fulfill the attack role? I have plenty of Crusaders, but four A-4s come with the kit.

Unfortunately Starfigter seems to be the only one marketing aftermarket decals for CV-11, and only the sheet for the F8s. That sheet includes decals for four 1967 F8s and six for the 1968 cruise.

I'm getting down to the end of my 1/350 Intrepid build, and want to get the air group as 'right' as possible.

Thanks!
