Happy New Year for everybody!
I am a scale modeler from Ukriane who works with 1:700 scale. I love to build the full-hull models... alas a few companies adds a lower hulls into their kits, so usually i'm scratchbuilding the ones for my IJN ships - as they are available almost exclusively as the waterline models.

And, now i have a "problem" about my Shokaku.. as i just can't find the body plan (the "theoretic drawing" of hull lines) of her, for to scratchbuild the lower hull properly and accurately!

PLEASE, can anybody help and share the historically credible scan of the body plan of Shokaku-class carrier? Many thanks in advance! Sincerely - Alex [ mandel97ua@yahoo.com ]

MODERATOR EDIT: Added the following, compiled by Dan Kaplan and the IJN posse.

Now that Fujimi's 1/350 Shokaku is out and mine ($250!!!) is on the way, I figure it's a good time to revive this thread.

So. 1st question: For a 1/350 carrier kit, a hanger is almost a must whether scratch built or out of box. Does anyone have any references that shows the length, width and layout of Shokaku's hangers?

LOL, I see you picked up my scan from the discussion over at j-aircraft.com/ships

The Hara Shobo planset is really the only available reference. No dimensions. The thing to keep in mind is that the hagar deck varies in width from section to section, as some areas have workshops placed between the hull plating and the hangar wall.

Not that it will be built so soon, but I am comptemplating something similar. However,I will probably opt for a simpler setup that spans the distance between the fore and aft elevators, really just to highlight the wells.

There is certainly an opportunity for an aftermarket kit here, now with 2 CV kits on the market. All IJN CV elevator/wells are essentially the same, excepting the size of the elevator. A gerenric set of of walls, with different deck inserts, would do the trick. I can dream.

The 3DCG Futubasha Volume on the Shokakus also has a cutaway rendering (below)

Thanks, Dan. Futubasha Volume on the Shokakus seems to be out of print according to HLJ. Bummer. One thing your illustration showed is forward end of the aft elevator well seems to be closed off with a fire door. Maybe that is the excuse for closing off all 4 sides of the elevator well in the Fujimi and Hasagawa kits? Does the illustration show similar fire containment barriers around the other 2 elevator wells?

Another question, do the illustration mean to show the hanger walls to be white? or Gray?

Internal walls were white, thought the exposed elevator shaft walls themselves will be grey. The illustration does show a curtained firewall in the closed postion, and I believe all the elevators were so equipped fore and aft. But, the fire curtain would not be closed except if under attack or on fire.

Here is a scan of the hanger area and bulk heads (waterlining may be easier then Akagi as not so many BH) to show you what is in-store for you when modifying internals for hanger deck. The carrier is a beauty but will need after market PE to improve IMHO. There are way too many wedge supports that will need replacing and the under deck details are in need of PE like the Akagi. The aircraft sets are nice in clear plastic. Glad I ordered extras as these will be popular like the Fujimi figures.

Yes, I am disappointed that neither Fujimi nor Hasagawa was considerate enough to design the kit so that what comes in the box doesn't obstruct the installation of a scratch built hanger.

Yeah, that's a problem. We're back to elevator shafts.

For completeness sake, let me post the full scan of that page from the Futubasha volume, as well as some rare photos of Shokaku's damage at Santa Cruz that shows some hangar wall detail. THen I'll post some elevator shaft photos, though not of this class

Unryu class elevator detail from Kasagi. I have more on my work PC. Incidentally, the two objects on the hangar deck are two of the enclosed 25mm mounts viewed from the rear.

Hello Shokaku class fans

hangar layout...

I have been sent an e-mail of hangar layout scans by our esteemed and ever helpful Modelling colleageue Peppe Giuffre via Alex Mandel.

Alas they are unable to post them- and I am unsure whether I can post them all - copyright etc etc

Hence I post an 'illustrative' image from the AJ Press Profile Morskie ship monograph

Redacted by Tracy: sending copies by e-mail is also a violation of copyright FYI... be careful what you offer to do! If you can cite the source of the plans below then I will let them stay... see my post below.

Cheers

Jim Baumann

Dan:

Do you know if the transverse wall seen through Shoho's elevator well is a fixed bulkhead or a movable fire break?

Unlike the larger fleet carriers, shortcomings in the design parameters in the hulls used for CVLs meant that the hangar deck was limited to the space between the two elevators. So, what we're seeing is the forwardmost, or rearmost, solid bukhead for one of the elevator wells.

The attached plan view illustrates the extent of the hangar deck for Zhuiho. (note: Shoho/Zuiho are unique among the CVLs for having 2 hangar decks).

So, unfortunately Chuck, no way to use the well provided in the Shokaku kit :(

On a related note, I came across a website a few years back of a Japanese modeler who was scratchbuilding a 1/350 Zuikaku, including a hangar deck. The site was never updated but the work posted was impressive. There are 6 pages to view, mostly hangar deck construction and very well done. See:

Hey guys...

I don't really mean to hijack the thread... but I've been considering getting a 1/700 kit of both Shokaku and Zuikaku, and was wondering in your experience, which kit was the best?

I'm considering the Tamiya ones...

But I also noticed that Fujimi newly released a 1/700 Zuikaku with decals and all, but from experience, Fujimi's 1/700 kits from the 90s don't look very accurate, and I have no idea if their newly released kit of Zuikaku has been improved.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, the Fujimi is just a re-release with wood deck decals and a small PE fret. Tamiya still superior, with some flaws. Though, the Fujimi cartograph wood deck decakl is pretty nice (also sold separately)

That's what I was thinking too... From experience, Tamiya typically produces finer models, at least, from that era.

I did a Hasegawa Akagi, it was alright. I used a knife to do the decking on my own, it turned out pretty ok, so the deck I can fix...

Thanks for the 2 cents!

* If from a book, please credit the book and limit yourself to one photo from each book, as a review item in a sense.
* Plans need to be cited as well; what source they are from, and please limit yourself to a portion of any one plan.
* If there is a site that has a bunch of those photos please link to them (other than known copyright infringing sites) directly instead of reposting "their" photos.

This will help shield us from copyright liability and getting our hulls sued out from under us.
