I wish we had an injection molded model of the Midway in her as built configuration. I know it will probably be a while before anyone tackles that job but it would be nice. it almost makes me with that Revell would re-release the FDR poor as it is.

i made my FDR from papercard. that is and was the hardest carrier i ever made. i don't think a 1/350 0r 1/700 plastic will be on it's way.

I'm trying to decide whether I should get an arii midway. Just how good is this kit? I can't find any reviews or sprue shots. Also, what is the consensus on the scale of the model? I hear that it is much larger than 1:800. Is this the case? What do you think? I really want to build Midway after finding the general plan booklet.

It's similar to the other kits in that line. It's a little overscale though. It is the only plastic kit of a Midway currently in production though so it probably would be your best bet.

It looks like a MS-21 paint job with the 5N Blue but the blue looks like it is a little lighter shade of 5N.

A WAG will have me say it's 5-O.

It looks to me as if the yard didn't get the port side painting done before the scheduled ceremonies.

It strikes me as either Ms 22 or 12, and I'm leaning toward 12. The hull is certainly shadowed, but amidships there's a bit catching full sun, and it's darker than the upperworks (yes, I've placed my finger over the shadow between them to correct for optical illusion, and I still think the lower hull is darker). The contrast between upper and lower is not as stark as I'd expect for Ms 22, hence my thoughts of the late-war 5-O/5-N resurrection of Ms. 12, like what the Lexington got.

Greetings everyone,
I have 4 of Revell's 1/540 Midway Class Carriers. One in original box ca. 1980's(unbuilt), One built OOB(grandma's house), another (WIP)converted to SCB-110 as Coral Sea(1984) and the FDR 1947. The scratchbuilt carrier is AWESOME....!!!!
My 1/540 Coral Sea SCB -110 model has a .040 full hanger deck and flightdeck and hurricanebow. I lengthened the Hull to match an enlarged starboard view drawing from A War Machine Issue and Flightdeck Lighting schematic for Coral Sea. The only parts used from the kit are the Island w/Phalanx added, and the Gallery below the Island. Granddad was onboard during Med Cruise 1952 with VMF-211. I went with him to she her in Oct.1984 at NOB Norfolk, just before refit for F-18's. Have a few Kodak Camera photos. Wish I would have taken more at the time. I need plans of all side bulkheads to finish this conversion/scratchbuild. Any suggestions? Is the book that the Coral Sea Association published still available? Dane

My wife's Stepfather was on board that day (he was a youngster). His Dad worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was able to get on with his son to see the ship, at least according to the Step Dad's recollection.

Not the FDR, and a black-and-white photo, but in this one:

you can clearly see the demarkation line for a Ms. 22 or 12 scheme on Midway's bow, where there's nothing that could be causing a shadow of that shape. She may have been repainted into Ms. 21 later, but CVB-41 was definitely in a graded scheme when that photo was taken.
