What are the 2 long radars that sit fore and aft on the island?
Which of the 2 WEM PE Set (Revell Ark Royal, Invincible) would be “appropriate” for the 1955 Ark Royal?

The "long radars" are the antennae for Type 982. I'd advise against purchasing PE sets for the Revell kits of ARK ROYAL or INVINCIBLE for a 1955 ARK ROYAL (ie the fourth ship of the name), since those sets are designed for kits of the INVINCIBLE class ships, which includes the fifth HMS ARK ROYAL. None of the parts are compatible with ARK ROYAL (iv). The radars required for the fourth ARK ROYAL in 1955 can be found on set 701 (http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochu ... mpe701.jpg) - the upper right pair in the picture are Type 982, and the lower right are for Type 983, of which there was one set at each end of the island. Later, ARK ROYAL was fitted with Type 965 instead of one of the 982 sets, and later with a pair of 965s - this aerial is also to be found on the same PE fret, although it may be a little overscale.

Tim, thank you ever so much for the info!!!

I build a batch of the Type 42 Stretch awhile back and believe I just may have those radars available!!!

I have suddenly gotten the “bug” to finish a lot of the British ships I have and the Ark Royal is one of them. As I wish a simple build of the Ark Royal, looking to practically do her straight out of the box.

Would you happen to know what colors she carried? I “see” a Light Gray with Gunship Gray flight deck and white stripes.

Thank you again!!!

I doubt that ship was Light Gray and the deck Gunship Gray, for two reasons: I believe that the Gunship Gray shade was not developed (by the US Air Force!) until the 1980s, and I know that the RN would have used "grey" colours rather than "gray" (two nations divided by a common language - rant over! ). Best to ask John Snyder at White Ensign for the likely shades of grey - although there are colour photos of RN carriers about that period with green flight decks.

The configuration depicted in the Fujimi kit is, as always, an approximation, but was only correct(ish) for a short time. On trials, she had triple-cheese antennae for the Type 982 radars, and, in a 1955 mini-refit shortly after completion but apparently before the ship actually commissioned, the guns were removed from P1 and P2 4.5" turrets (the for'd two on the port side), leaving the turrets in place, and the sponson area roofed over to increase the deck area of the angled flight deck - see photo at http://www.navyphotos.co.uk/arkroy5b.jpg

Incidentally, if you wish to include an air group, beware - the aircraft included in the Fujimi kit are as follows:
Mis-shaped Seafires (never carried by ARK ROYAL)
Sea Furies (never carried by ARK ROYAL)
Gannets (embarked in ARK ROYAL from July 1955)
Wessex helos (not embarked in ARK ROYAL until 1961)
Thus the only ones compatible with a 1955 model are the four Gannets - hardly a representative air group!

Tim,

My most humble apologies for the grammar errors!! Obviously you live in Britain and thus speak the correct English. First, I am a Mexican thus don’t speak English. :woo_hoo: Second, took me a long time of frustration prior to learning the “why” there were different spellings of numerous words (armouer/colours/grey). Never knew/understood the “why” of that!! Now I do. Now at that age where the major question is – what difference does it REALLY make?!?!? :wave_1:

Again I must apologize for the Gunship Grey. It was meant to indicate the choice of colours I use for my modern carrier flight decks.

I will ask John Snyder for his opinion. I too have seen the Green flight decks. Do not think Ark Royal had that colour for the time frame I desire.

I know about the for'd two guns on the port side being plated over. The way I read it is that happen “about a year after her commissioning”, thus I wish to build her during that one year “as commissioned”.

Lord have mercy!!! You have made my build even easier!!! Instead of a whole air wing, throwing some Gannets on her deck is perfect!!! I do not know how to attach photos of the ships that I have in progress. I was nearly finished with the Haguro, and then thought I could “quickly” build 6 modern subs. Then got a hair up my rectum and wanted to see all that I had for the May 1941 KGV and PoW. And I still have yet to complete the 4 Invincible class ships I have.

Needed a break after putting that fragile WEM PE on the KGV and PoW. WOW!!!!!!!!! So delicate and soft is the brass!! I will not place the mast top radars on until I have finish them!! I KNOW I will bent/break them!! Railing is next and then rigging. . .

Here is some video I found cross linked on another site.
It's part 2, haven't found part 1 yet. (haven't looked all that hard)
It shows and explains recovery ops on a British Carrier, not sure which one, I'm sure the experts will chime in.
Starts at a situation where the aircraft had to be re-spotted for launch on the cat using a bridle.
Ends with a barrier being erected on the flight deck and replacement of a damaged arresting gear cable.

Good shots of the Sea Vixen, Scimitar and Fairey Gannet AEW.

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=148_1311382665 Enjoy!

Hello everyone.
I have only just discovered this website after casually browsing info. for Ark Royal IV model.
I've already constructed an Ark Royal IV model at the scale of 1/144. This makes it 6ft.7in. in length and 15in width. Draft of 5in. Approx 100Lbs. weight.
It took me approx. 12 years of painstaking work from Scratch. Ie: No plans and very few ready made parts.
I was unable to obtain plans due to confidential constraints at the time, and very few ready made parts due to the scale.
However, I had many books and personal photographs, as well as MEMORY to go on. ( I was ships crew for three years ). Photographs were scaled up using known sizes of items within the pictures. Ie: Height of a man @ 6ft.
The main hull is of solid wood, constructed as per the "bread and butter " system from the keel to deck four, then 2in.x1in. short wood lengths around the hull and up to flight deck. The island is of 1mm. ply and plastic card.
Everything is as accurate as I could manage including rotating 965Q aerials.
Info. for an earlier question in this blog. ( 965 were either single for Frigates or doubled up for larger ships. P for single and Q for double ).
Up top weight and radar definition dictated which ships had which ).
Model Ark has four shafts driven by four electric 12v motors and twin rudders, all to scale.
The funnel, deck edge cranes and masts are constructed from Plas strut and card. Again accurate in design and size.
The flight deck markings are accurate as well as a total of 13 aircraft ranging from Simitar, Vixen, Gannet, P1127, Buccaneer and Phantoms.
Not to forget a Whirlwind and Wessex helicopters. These depict all the different types of aircraft that served on Ark during her lifetime.
The Phantoms were Tayima kits. The Gannet and Scimiter were Vacu. formed kits and the rest hand made.
Markings on aircraft were formed from press lettering 3mm. high and hand painting.
Unfortunatly Model Ark has been laid up for about four years now, but will not be scrapped ! Now that I have retired I hope to bring her out of mothballs this winter, repaint etc. and put her back in water.
If anyone would like to see pictures etc. please contact me via e-mail at c.schiraldi@hotmail.co.uk and I'll do my best. .... Don't all rush at once !!
Regards to all.

Jimmy, do you know if this book has any line drawings of the ship at various points in her career?

No, unfortunately. It is a "biography". Nice, but of limited interest for the modelers.

I stopped the 1977 conversion of the Fujimi kit. I will be happy if I can find some plans. I have got only a 15 cm drawing of a old book.

Just want to add my name to the list of people looking for reliable scale drawings (with body plan) for HMS Ark Royal, besides the relatively expensive copies made to order by the NMM. I find it amazing that there is no other source out there for such a popular ship (the same goes for HMS Eagle). For me the scale of the drawings isn't important. I'd be just as happy with plans from a book or magazine.

Andy, British Aircraft Carriers: Design, Development & Service Histories by David Hobbs contains a good NMM as fitted drawing of Ark Royal in 1955. This drawing gives you basic frame positions as well as the placements of the heavy AA sponsons and the island/funnel structure. These can be used to check the Fujimi kits and the famous cutaway drawing by Ross Watton. They seem to be accurate. As unlike Victorious the two carriers never changed their hanger deck heights or frame spacing you should be able to work out the deck lay out and all supporting structure for Ark Royal using pictures. Pictures of Ark Royal being scrapped will be especially useful for this. Note that all new structure would be bracketed to existing frames, the sponsons remained visible under the new structure and carrier flightdecks have no sheer so you can use straight perspective lines when looking at a picture . For Eagle this is also possible except that she did get a full new island superstructure rather than new structures added to the original one. A possible solution might be to use type 984 radar and its platform as a starting point as this was the same on HMS Victorious and is well documented in the AOTS. It is lot of work though so you will have to choose between this an spending a lot of money on NMM plans.

Hi, it is also worth Googling her as HMS Ark Royal. Hopefully this bring up a few leads for what you want, and the images (photos and other information) are usually very helpful. Good luck. Mike.
