Hi John. Vlad wrote this on a thread on Main Forum regarding the storm:

Here is an article about the deployment in Sept-Nov 2004:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... 1143_5.htm
"Following repairs, the ship participated in the exercises in the Atlantic Ocean together with other ships and the deck based aviation. This was only the second mission of the ship in the past decade. The most ambitious naval exercises in the mid-Atlantic ever performed by the Russian Navy included the Navy's flagship nuclear-powered heavy cruiser, the Pyotr Veliky, our only aircraft carrier currently in service, the Admiral Kuznetsov, the cruiser Marshal Ustinov, the destroyer Admiral Ushakov, a tanker and two support ships. The group arrived in the waters about 20nm off Iceland on 05 October, and returned home on 01 November 2004."

Vladimir

As I posted there, the Sovremenny is indeed the Besstrashniy, though has been renamed Admiral Ushakov.

Cheers.

Kuznetsov
Piotr Velikiy ( 099, Kirov Class )
Marshal Ustinov ( 055, Slava class)
Admiral Ushakov ( 343, Sovremenny Class, ex-Besstrashny)
Admiral Chabanenko ( 437, Udaloy-II )
Oilier ( my guess )
Ocean tug ( there really was, just in case :lol_1: )

There is no kit for Chabanenko (Udaloy-2) so ship can be omitted as well as support/supply ships.

Someone's stealing my project!!! But I'll be happy to cooperate as I will most likely waste it anyway!

The Oiler is Sergey Osipov, of the Boris Chilikin class. I have some good pictures, at least enough to give a close try to make a model of it. The type is derived from the Merchant tankers of the Velikiy Oktyabr class.

First Ocean tug was Altay of the Project 1452 ocean salvage tugs. (haven't found ANY pictures of these)

Other tug was SB-406 a Project 712 tug, I have some pictures of this type, yet not enough to build (or even attempt a build) of it.

My fleet will mostly be downscaled to Ustinov, Velikiy, Kuznetsov and Osipov.

Correction to Andrey's post, Chabanenko was not in that fleet, she was in the meanwhile practicing with Vepr in a French-Russian exercise. Afterwards they both visited Brest (in France).

Felipe how did the Master's Essay go? I have just started mine, although next year is the most important year in which I will finally have to write it. Now it's more a collection of information.

Regards
Roel

Yes, that is one of the pictures I'm using too. On the right at some distance you can see the SB-406.
Here is the best picture I have found so far, it's her sister from the Black Sea Fleet Shakhter:

Image

I also have something from jane's with a picture of her second sister and one where she is spraying with her water cannons on the Navy Days (Shakhter again). Seeing from this distance the painting should be the same.

For Altay, there's a complete lack of information/pictures on her. http://www.hazegray.org gives the dimensions of these vessels, but has no pictures of them. Altay seems quite impressive with 92m in length! There are also some blurry pictures when they stopped in Iceland and both Altay and SB-406 mated with Kuznetsov and Velikiy.

It's the Sergey Osipov, an underway replenishment tanker of the Boris Chilikin class. I'm already doing research about this one as I want it in my fleet. Lots of info, but very little pictures...

Velikiy mostly just carries two helicopters, one guidance helo and one ASW helo.
Kuznetsov, I think you could just look around in those pictures posted here before, the same site as Andrey linked to above. There you have pictures of Kuznetsov's deck with the aircraft onboard. The others are in the hangar and hence you don't have to build them. They lost, again, two Su-33 planes... One got recovered from the water, the other was destroyed by depth charges on the bottom of the sea.
I don't think they have that many of them left!

You're "red" starts looking like mine Andrey, I did add some black to make it darker though. You said you're a slow builder, but I think the adverse, first we saw all your models coming in the gallery, Neustrashimiy, Slava etc. and now these in an advanced stage.... I spent more than a year, with breaks, on the Velikiy alone!

Nearing complete, paint a few more planes and choppers. Used Tamiya haze grey spray overall, walmart grey primer on most of flight deck and testors gunship grey on landing strip.

I was looking through some of the pictures I have of Soviet
and Russian warships and I came across this evocative
shot of a Russian battle group centred on the Kutnetzov.
I think this may have been posted on the site some time
ago but I can't be sure. I thought all you Soviet/Russian
fans might appreciate seeing it again. I can make out the
Peter Velikiy but any one like to guess the Slava and the
vessel astern of the group?

My skills on identifying Russian ships are a bit rusty but I believe that the ship astern is a Sovremenny...at least I can make out the two quad Sunburn launchers and a big gun mount suggesting a double 130mm. Can't ID the ship name though...nearly impossible with this angle!

I agree with Filipe; the white object at the top of the bridge seems to be the signature Sovremenny dome.

On a page 5 of this thread we were talking about it.

Kuznetsov
Piotr Velikiy ( 099, Kirov Class )
Marshal Ustinov ( 055, Slava class)
Admiral Ushakov ( 343, Sovremenny Class, ex-Besstrashny)
Admiral Chabanenko ( 437, Udaloy-II )
Sergey Osipov (Oilier, Chilikin Class )
Ocean tug.

Chabanenko is not on this picture but she was around as well.

Yes, there was a link to a video of this very same battle group with some stunning shots of Besstrashniy plowing through heavey seas. I have some still pics at home. Will check it this evening and post here.

Cheers.
Pachi.

I built this model as Besstrashniy (No PE, shame on me) and also placed the helo over the net/grid (not sure about the correct word). How did you finish the net/grid?. Looks nice, this white frame. Is it a PE part or is a scratchbuilt one?. If so, would you explain how did you make it?.

Thanks in advance.
Pachi.

So I get this giant box in the mail today. As I open it, I am struck by the fact that this kit is a disaster. The deck is in 3 pieces to facilitate motorized operations in Shanghai's largest duck ponds. The decals are a mess - no deck markings, just names, stars for the ship and planes, and numbers - I guess I should be happy to have that much. The Yaks look acceptable to my untrained eye - much better than the helos. Detail below the deck is almost nil. Since the hull was made to be motorized, the prop shafts are huge, and the hull is flatter than a pancake. I realize that waterlining is the only way to go. I will probably raid the following for photoetched details:
-WEM 1/600 Moskva/Leningrad PE set - I believe it has the proper radars and such, even if they will be slightly small, so be it - better than the provided blobs.
-GMM 1/500 Naval Ship PE set - for railings and hatches and other details - I figure the differences between the two PE sets will offset each other.
Does anyone have any ideas for deck markings or other details? I am really wide open on this one.

Neptune - the more I look at the kit the more I like the potential. I'm keeping track of what I do to it, and I'll post more as I go along. I've been drilling out the portholes and filling the incorrect ones. I'm not a real rivet counter, but I want it to look reasonable. I left the propshafts, but replaced the parts that hold them in place.

OK the real ship
Image
Now the model images
Start with sticking the ribs to some cardboard.
Image
Then stick to blocks of foam and cut out.
Image
Then thinking about a new car !!!
Image
Then using a belt sander to sculpture the foam blocks
Image
Not to mention getting that shrinking feeling

Hol-y... moley! Definately keep us updated!

WOW! Maybe I should finally start that 1/72 Slava....

Can you tell us a little more about your hot-wire cutter setup?

Are you using closed-cell foam, or the regular old white pebbly stuff?
