Just wanted to start off by thanking everyone who contributed to this thread - amazing wealth of information!

So I recently picked up the Aoshima 1/700 Soryu kit that is the 1941 version (No. 222), along with the Shipyardworks wooden deck/PE set. I goofed though and picked up the Flyhawk FH700208 super set which appears to be designed for the 1938 kit.

Any sense of whether there were any changes to the Soryu's hull between 1938 and 1941? I'm trying to figure out if I can use the Flyhawk set for the 1941 kit, or whether I will need to pair it with the 1938 kit. From what I can tell of the Flyhawk set, the PE seems to only modify the hull below the flight deck -- which might be work well if the only changes were to the bridge/island (not sure of the correct term there, my apologies).

I tried going through the pictures on Ryuji's thread comparing the 1938 and 1942 kits from Fujimi and Aoshima, but Photobucket has the pictures locked. For what it's worth, I saw this gentleman put together the same 1941 kit using the Flyhawk set, so hopefully I should be ok.

Many thanks in advance!

There were no changes to the hull once she was commissioned. Some subtle changes to the island, yes.

Dan, many thanks for the response. Good to know! I was worried I wouldn't be able to use the Flyhawk set (or would have to buy the 1938 kit). Happy new year to you, thanks again!

Hi, I´ve been looking for the Fujimi PE Grade-Up 34 set in 1/350 for the Fujimi 1/350 kit of the Hiryu but to no avail.
Somebody knows where can I buy that set or another similar of other brand?
I know about the existence of the Shipyard wooden deck set only.
Many thanks.

Hobby Search seems to think they can get it in stock within two weeks: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10650402

Well that went wrong,

Edit to what it should be:

I might wanna build hiryu since premium version is on sale at my retailer.

Questions

1. Are there terrible eyecatching exterior spoiling issues with the fujimi kit? I.e. non fitting decks and pieces leaves gaps?
2. Do i need 25mm triples (only have the dual version frok infini in stash?
3. Which planes did Hiryu carry at midway and pearl
4. If launching a full strike like at pearl, how much planes would be on the flightdeck?
5. Which planes would that be? Zero and b6n?
6. Is there any good stuff for using figurea on deck?
7. Is there any good stuff for fuel lines, bombs and torpedoes on the flightdeck? (Even if not realistic)
8. Is the fujimi pe good enough or is there a better set? (I will replace the aa guns with pe, same for winches)
9. in 1/700 finemolds has this IJN Carrier lift package, is there something similar in 350?
Its a list, sry for that,

Kind regards

IJNfan

I'll do my best to answer, though others should feel free to chime in.

Fit-wise, I'm not far along enough on my build to be definitive. The flight deck uses a shallow lip to place it within the hull halves. The construction of the hull halves with joining spars might make some areas fit imperfectly. Otherwise, it seems typical. I hate the kit planking because it's scaled too wide, but that's me.

7 triple and 5 twin 25mm AA emplacements.Three of the twins are enclosed power turrets.

She carried Zeros, Kates, and Vals for both operations.

That depends. Did you read my reply on the previous page? viewtopic.php?f=46&t=35005&start=160#p745185

See above. Depends on which wave.

Yes, but others can speak to that. More so for 1/350 scale, and you haven't actually specified that.

There are realistic alternatives in 1/700 and 1/350. Five Star makes them, others as well.

Still the only option, short of cobbling together stuff from generic sets. Looks good enough for most pieces.

Not yet. It's certainly ripe for aftermarket, particularly 3D printed. For now, you must scratch-build, as I did.

For those needing detailed references, apparently there will be an AOTS (Anatomy of the Ship) volume for Hiryu released in early July 2022. The author is Stefan Draminski.

That should partner well with the recently released "Legends of Warfare - Hiryu, Soryu & Unryu class Aircraft Carriers"

Legends is more of a pictorial, and the AOTS more of a mechanism and schematic book.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum, just got back into model warship building just before Covid-19 hit. So since the pandemic has put a halt on a lot of my social activities I really got back into this hobby after a 40+ year hiatus. I discovered that my new "niche" is working with 1/350 scale warships, specifically those from WWII and to a lesser extent WWI, so I've started these "rivals series" of ship kits, like the Bismarck, Prinz Eugen, Hood and Prince of Wales (completed the Bismarck & Hood, have the kits in queue for the other two). I wanted to do all the big Battle of Midway carriers next, and I found varieties of all of them in 1/350 scale EXCEPT the Soryu. So my question to the greater group out there is - has anyone ever attempted to convert a Hiryu into a Soryu? I know that they were classified as "sister ships" but from the research I've done so far there seem to be some major differences - most notably the island being on the opposite sides of the two ships! From the 1/700 scale models I've seen of the two, it also looks like their red/white striped "fantail" section of the rear edge of the flight decks are different, and probably some of the gun placements too...anyone have any experience with this type of "conversion", or does anyone have any links to ship blueprints or detailed photos that might help? Thanks in advance and its great to be here!

These sisters have some significant differences, which would make a conversion extremely problematic. The Wiki article Japanese has a decent synopsis. Using the translation function:

" Initially, it was planned and built as a ship of the same type as Soryu . However, due to the abolition of the Armed Forces Treaty, the degree of design freedom increased, so the flight deck width was widened by 1 m and the ship width was slightly increased [28] , and the hull structure welding was abolished due to the 4th Fleet Incident [29] , improving wave resistance. Therefore, it became an aircraft carrier built with a different drawing from Soryu, such as raising the bow 1m and stern 40cm freeboard . [30] Masterplan number G10 [31] . At that time, foreign countries were notified of underestimated figures (standard displacement of 10,000 tons, total length of 209.84 m, maximum width of 20.84 m) [32] .

The feature is that the island-shaped bridge is located in the center of the port side, similar to Akagi after the renovation........

Like Akagi, the (bridge) shape is 4 layers and 5 decks, which is one layer more than Soryu for reasons such as ensuring forward visibility . [36] Not only that, the length of the front and back of the bridge was also longer than that of Soryu, so there was an operation room, etc., and I think this is the reason why Hiryu became the flagship of the Second Carrier Division , not Soryu, the first ship. It has been done [37] . On the defensive side, the engine room and steering room are armored to withstand the destroyer 's 5-inch gun, and the gas tank and ammunition depot are armored to withstand the cruiser 's 8-inch gun, but flight deck protection is not considered. [38] ] . ..."

Coincidentally, a master Japanese modeler, Toshiro Akiyama, has been scratch-building a 1/350 Soryu. See: http://tospop.livedoor.blog/archives/cat_195070.html

Just asking a question. I currently have an Aoshima Soryu, I just wondering if it's possible to fit a photo-etch set intended for Fujimi kit to an Aoshima kit like my Soryu? The photo-etch that I'm talking about is an Artist Hobby 1/700 Soryu basic set. The nice thing about this photo-etch is it is a Midway version.

It might be possible, but there's no certainty that the two kits are, in fact, identical dimension-wise. There are always small differences between molds

3D-Wild has just released a 1/350 Soryu! I've purchased some of their IJN aircraft for my other carriers and these little guys are pretty awesome - hoping the carrier is of the same quality, the promo pictures look amazing. I especially like the detail of having figures inside the island, and the option of doing the flight deck half-open. The carrier planes can be ordered in multiple configurations - for example, you can choose the Kates with torpedoes or with a bomb load, with wings down or folded, canopies closed or open. https://3d-wild.com/collections/warship-model-kits/products/1-350-ijn-soryu-aircraft-carrier-full-hull-model-kit?variant=40634268975157
