This kit does look promising. Mine's on order.

My pre-order of Kaga and 1939 Fuso arrived today from HLJ. Both kits rather stunning in detail, both what is cast into larger parts and the number of smaller parts that were once cast-in details themselves in the old kit. Just lovely.

My build pace is so far behind that of new releases in1:700 - these kits are both going to have to sit aside for a while. But my first-look-in-the-box impression is "awestruck." :thumbs_up_1:

No degaussing cable.

Thats from a different thread, but I thought that IJN Kaga, IJN Ryujo and IJN Akagi never had one.
Excuse me if Im wrong.

Edit: Pit - Road was planning to release a IJN Ryuho anyone knows any news ? And what about IJN Hiyo!
Edit:Okay I admit it Im not a fan of aircraft carriers but those Light aircraft carriers from Japanese Navy where awesome looking ships.

All capital ships received them (excepting one of the DDs, Ariake, I think) in the final refits during the latter half of 1941 as part of the run up to war.

Problem is, we don't have photographic evidence of exact placement.

I was going to replay, but we dont have photos. Oh after IJN Yamashiro wich is the most discombobulate japanese warship(from late 1943/early 1944 and onwards), now we are not 100% sure about that too.

Possibly. There is photo evidence of degaussing cable removal for select new construction or rebuild/refit of some ships in 1943-44 (see Oyodo, Unryus, rebuilt Isuzu, Junyo), while others (Kiso, Katakami, DDs) clearly retained theirs. Would have to see if that Gakken volume has any hull photos for '43-'44.

G'day all. I'm preparing to do a second 1/350 Akagi. Since my first build, Tamiya have released the two shades of Grey that the IJN used on their ships depending on where they were painted/fitted out. My research suggests that Akagi was at Kure before Pearl and Midway. Therefore I assume that she was painted in Kure Grey. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

One Of Toshifumi Kimoto's board participants, who calls himself Hayataka, had posted some stills of the film of Kaga pitching in heavy seas enroute to PH with the Kido Butai. He has indicated what he believes are the three sets of forward support, which would mean the refit took place prior to the start of the war, which would make the most sense. Judge for yourself.

I was wondering if anyone could identify a structure on the Kaga flightdeck, as seen in the familiar late 1941 shot below:

Taken from IJN movie footage (I think it was even used in Tora Tora) the Kaga deck is seen with the wind deflectors extended. Astearn, there is a large "Gallows" like structure, behind the aircraft. I have not seen a better photo of this thing, nor have I seen it depicted in any models that I can recall.... which leads me to believe that it was not used during takeoff or recovery ops.

So, was it some sort of lifting device, Captains laundry line, IJN Volleyball net....?

I think it's one of the elevators raised up for an aircraft coming from the lower hangar.

I've always been perplexed by there being all those aircraft on deck during such rough weather. That's one mean bit of drilling! That, or the crew did something to really tick off the captain or XO.

Yes, that is what it is.

Ok.....that makes sense, then I assume that this framework (?) was then somehow retracted back in to the elevator well.... while leaving the elevator floor flush with the flightdeck. I take it that this was common to all/certain IJN carriers ? I don't remember seeing anything this massive on other carriers.

I wish I could find a better photo or drawing of this thing, it would be an interesting feature to scratch. I don't recall seeing it in any PE detail sets either.

This was something peculiar to the after elevator on Kaga, and maybe also on Akagi. It was a double elevator. When the upper elevator platform was at the flightdeck level, the lower platform was at upper hangar level, and both moved together. When an aircraft from the lowest hangar was hoisted directly to the flightdeck via the lower elevator platform, the upper platform would be raised above flightdeck level, as seen in this photo.
