Ok, as we had such a lively discussion on the old Revell kit, here is the thread belonging to it.

I guess for starters a list of accessories and useful reference would be useful.

Out of my head I'd say the following accessories come in handy:

- WEM PE set
- WEM resin pompoms (if PE is not one's choice)
- WEM resin Vickers 0.5 (if PE is not one's choice)
Added by moderator at Jorit's request:
- WEMs plane sets
- As for replacement parts, the boats and rafts also need replacing, WEM again. I was thinking about trying to cast some replacement turrets as the kit ones aren't very good.

Anyone else for references?

Jorit

Not sure about dedicated references but anthony preston's book on Carriers has good shots of Ark to use for reference photos.

A russian publication Morskaya Collectia has recently come out, I think they contain mainly photos and are priced about the same as Profile Morskie so worth a look. There are some plans in the John Roberts British Warships of the Second World War. That's as much as I know.

As for replacement parts, the boats and rafts also need replacing, WEM again. I was thinking about trying to cast some replacement turrets as the kit ones aren't very good.

It's definitely a tough job this one.

Thanks for the tip on the Russian profile book!

As for the boats, has anyone already looked deeper into that? I'm particularly wondering about the large motor boats.

As for the 4.5 in guns, that's indeed tricky. Some have tried recently asking WSW to cast some, as they have them in the Scylla kit, but that was unsuccessful.

I have never cast parts for myself, so if you'll ever do this and the forms allow 16 to be cast then I'd be highly interested.

Hi Jorit
The turrets 'should' be fairly easy as they are flat bottomed and squarish. Just a question of making a decent initial copy or two and reproducing them. Hope that isn't a case of famous last words...

Hey, best of luck! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Jorit

PS: I could try to get one of the moderators to edit my initial post so that the information on add-on sets will be preserved in one post; would that be useful?

Actually mike if you successfully cast those turrets I would be interested in them too. Name your price.

Mike,

Put me down for a set of turrets too. Topic for the pub at Telford perhaps?

Also, McCart's book on Ark Royal is worth having.

It is tough, but "doable".

Cheers,

Rob

I think it is a question of getting the research in hand, the biggest problem is knowing what it supposed to look like. Perhaps if we all scour the internet for photographs we can pool these together and combine resources. As Jorit says, there is plenty of help in terms of accesories from WEM, the problem is knowing where to put them.

How come you cant part out another kit? Do none of the Tamiya Battleships or battlecruisers have usefull parts?

Not really. You could get the Pompoms from a PoW kit, but there are no Vickers quads out there - unless the new Tamiya E-class destroyer has some, which I don't know. The 4.5in Mk I/Mk IIID mount combination was unique to Ark Royal, Scylla, Charybdis and a number of depot ships, so these are really a toughie.

Jorit,
Do you know of any good references for the turrets? Photos would be good but plans even better.

The new Tamiya E-Class does have 0.5" quads, but only 2 sets per ship - which makes equipping Ark Royal with 8 a pricy proposition. As the WEM photoetch 0.5" have the tiniest pieces imaginable I may be taking the resin route. Or getting some new glasses...

I have the WSW Scylla kit and I copied the 4.5 mounts from it in white metal and they are going on my Ark Royal.
My first step in construction was to open the fore and aft decks in the side of the hull and then all the boat storage areas. Have also built elavtor and hanger detail but they are hard to see into.

The Tamiya E-Class does have 0.5" quads and they are really good for injection moulded plastic. Comparison with the ones in Hood show just how much things have changed in the last (nearly) 30 years.

Here is the thread which sparked this one. The only suitable aircraft (sadly) are the Swordfish - even if Revell's artist thought differently..

Hope this helps
