whoooo

Hopefully some underwater shots on this program

I assume its the 2003 wreck discovery survey that was done???

Did they ever sent an ROV down?, some pics of the Mighty Ark on the sea bed with that swordfish lying next to her could be just what the Doctor ordered! :lol_1:

All I have seem is the side scan graphics showing the ship and a swordfish on the seabed.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention my alarm is set!

Ummm... check my edit, the programme is on BBC1 not 2

There's also a page on it in this week's Radio Times with a shot (among others) of one of the AA gun turrets.

I found the full details online, here we go:-

SUNDAY 12 FEBRUARY

Documentary Shipwreck Ark Royal

8:00pm - 9:00pm

BBC1

VIDEO Plus+: 7909
Subtitled, Widescreen

The Ark Royal was sunk by a German torpedo in WWII and lost for over 60 years. After three years of searching, the aircraft carrier has been found and veterans who served on her will be the first to see the wreck a kilometre below the surface of the Mediterranean. They recall the events that led to the Ark achieving legendary status - the deadly convoys to Malta, and the sinking of the Bismarck when planes from Ark Royal crippled the German battleship.

Hawker Ospreys. Ark Royal embarked Ospreys of 800 Squadron 12/38 to 3/39, when they were replaced with Skuas.

Thanks in advance!

A wartime publication produced for the general public to buy and for it to boast morale.

Think its something ..... Illustrated.

I cant remember the title as I scanned it in years ago and the magazine is in the loft.

Thanks, Laurence. Your scanned image will keep me dreaming about a 1/350 model. Perhaps by the time I find all the reference material, one of the plastic model manufacturers will be issuing an Ark Royal; cross our fingers for a successful launch of the (Trumpeter) Hood!

Hi Mike,

Here are three more photos... now you really have no reasons not to... that is unless you are like me, waiting for a Trumpeter (or any other manufacturer) 1/350 Ark Royal! :eyebrows:

Right then though I'd post this here as I noticed this on ebay yesterday.

My probelm with it is I cannot possiblely concieve Ark Royal had her decks painted this colour pre-war or it was teak

Is this photograph correct or maybe an edited colourised mistake?

This magazine was produced during the war I believe and colour printing was rare.

Image

If you look it's very similar to this photo I posted earlier, same stern wave etc.

Image

Could it thus be the work of a rather colour blind editor? :lol_1:

I don't think that printing technology of the period could cope with colour photographs. IIRC what you got was a tinted B/W image. and whoever colourised the Ark thought she looked smart with a teak fightdeck

The roundels on the Swordfish definitely look colourised.

Hi Lozza,
Your home must be one huge stock pile of RN info Lozza are you purchasing a block of flats in order to store your collection? :lol_1: :lol_1: As for the Ark Royal picture i have never seen her deck shown in that colour before but saying that i stand to be corrected! Alan
