Does anybody knows, if there are out there, any good sets of scale drawings for HMS Nairana or HMS Vindex (other than the NMM plans) ???
Thanks...

It's another project on the back burner for now, I'll get round to it but there are a lot of others further ahead in the queue. Still, nice to have plans!

I don't know of anything available for your request, I suggest NMM will be the best option if you are serious about it, but probably about £30 each.

By Mid-Late 1944, what aircraft would have been carried on a CVE and how would they have been painted. The CVE in question is USS Block Island serving in the Atlantic. I know she carried Wildcats at the time of her sinking. Presumably Avengers as well?

Block Island CVE-21 was sunk in late May 1944. At that time VC-55 was embarked with 9 FM-2 Wildcats and 11 TBF Avengers

I built my Tamiya Bogue as Block Island. I painted the Avengers and Wildcats Dark Gull Gray over Non-Specular White .

By pure chance I received a new book today, "Color Schemes and Markings, U.S. Navy Aircraft, 1911-1950" by Bill Kilgrain.

Page 49 had the following picture and caption:

It is a decent general book, but it is a bit out of date (being some 25 years old). Got mine on eBay for about $20.

Can anyone tell me (and if possible, show me...) if the Casablanca CVE class had bilge keels ???
I´ve looked everywhere, I could have looked (or not...), and couldn´t find a plan or photo that shows them...hence the question.
Thanks.

The drawings in the AOTS for the Gambier Bay indicate pretty clearly the absence of bilge keels.

Yes, I know..I own the book too..
But I was looking for some kind of confirmation, either by photo, or by another set of plans.
For instance, I´ve seen a 1/72 model WITHOUT bilge keels, and another one in 1/96 which HAS them...
So, I ask again...Do they have or not bilge keels ???

I think you should compare this photos from shipyard/drydock like these:

http://www.navsource.org/archives/03/0306304.jpg
http://www.navsource.org/archives/03/0307610.jpg (this one too small...)

with Casablanca class models. Maybe it will help find solution.

I don't know if anyone has come across these, but Collections Canada (the federal historical archives service) has an incredibly useful site with all sorts of vintage photos of US-build CVEs from west coast yards being modified to RN/RCN standards at the Burrard yards in North Vancouver. One of the more interesting things (at lease to me) is that the RN/RCN CVE's had their flight decks extended at both ends. This, as well as a number of other modifications (e.g. AA) were also done by Burrards. Have a look at the attached site. Search "Carriers" and see what comes up. Great detail shots too.

Enjoy,

Mike In Edmonton

Is the Imerial War Museum site (attached). Just do a search for "escort carrier" and watch what pops up.

Dear shipmates!
I have problem - I want to build USS Gambier Bay 1/350 (Blue water navy) and I am not sure what camo was carried by planes during day of sinking - October 23rd 44. I am convinced it was tri colour camo, but I have seen also over all gloss blue. If any of you have a photo from of the plane from Oct. 44 please suply me whit it... :help_1:
Tahnks to all!

There is a painting on the front page of the Gambier Bay Association's website, which shows one of her Wildcats in action that day. The Wildcat is painted overall GSB. If you dig deeper into the Photos section, it looks like the Avengers may still have been tri-colored. FWIW, it looks like Keith Bender did his planes GSB when he build his Gambier Bay.

Hi Martin,
thank you for your effort!
I am quite sure that overall blue was never carried in October 44. Similar situation is with USS Princeton - I have seen models, paintings,.... with F6F GSB, BUT I have a picture of Hellcat with clearly white "belly" - the picture is from day of sinking.
Also I have photo of USS White Plains from Oct 24th 44 and there is Wildcat in tri colour scheme. In fact I haven´t find any photo in GSB. So I don´t really know...
