Hi guys! Can anybody tell me the answer to the following?

1. When did the Big E started getting into the LowViz config (such as the bow number)?
2. When did they phase in the F18 to replace the A7's?

Thanks for the info.

Noel

F-18s replaced the A-7's after the major 1986 to 1987 refit.

I too would also like to know the year the high-viz to low-viz hull numbers switched.

Low viz A-7Es started showing right after the refit where the island changed in 1983/84 ish. There are some pics on NAVSOURCE that support Low Viz A-7E, A-6E, EA-6B, and some F-14s by 1984.

http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/0265bk.jpg

The VF-213 F-14s appear to be in the overall Gloss Gull Gray scheme with High Viz Markings. The VF-114 Tomcats appear to be Light Ghost Gray with Low Viz Markings. The S-3s, E-2Cs, and KA-6Ds appear to be in the gloss gull gray paint with white undersides still. S-3s started going Light Ghost Gray at the end of the 80s.

When I cruised Nimitz CVW-9 in 1991, most of the airwing had gone low viz except some S-3s were in Gloss Gull Gray. The E-2Cs were still gray over white. E-2Cs went overall Gloss Gull Gray in the mid 90s.

Hope that helps some...........

Allow the designer a chance to tweak the design.

Shapeways has a practice that can be disappointing at best: for new products especially, even after a design passes Shapeways' design analysis software, it can sometimes be rejected by the "print engineer" if he/she determines that some feature of the part will likely be damaged during a two-part ultrasonic cleaning, a process that can be rough on products. When a rejection happens, the order is immediately canceled and the designer is informed why. This can happen even after the part has been successfully printed repeatedly. The design fix is often, but not always, pretty easy for the designer to make and the new design is perfectly acceptable.

Please consider giving the designer another chance.

Hi Red,

What material did you get on the island and how does it look when painted. The first batch of F3H Demons I got I did not get the frosted ultra-detail and they are very grainy and not suitable for parking next to the styrene Trumpeter jets.

I was wondering if that was the case with the Enterprise Island.

thanks,

Mark

Hey Mark, I have not started on the island yet. It will about after Christmas. I got the cheaper island from Shapeways. I will be adding more detail also scratch building the base. Not using the kit base at all. I like the scratch build base on my island. As of right now I have a 1/350 Knox and CFA in drydock. I will let you guys know when my attention turns to BigE.

The video camera to film landings on top of the PriFly: Is this a permanent structure on the Enterprise? I see images from 1962 and it's not there, later in '63 it's there, gone again in 64'. I can't seem to ID a definate time frame for when it was added to the top of the Prifly.

After her shakedown cruiser and before her 1963 -1964 WORLD CRUISE the PLAT hit was fitted. Your pic showed a single mast yardarm ...and pre 1963 . The 2nd Yardarm and taller mast was fitted yard period of 1964-1965.

Here is a pretty good place to get that kind of info. There is not a detailed link for 1982 but there is on for CVW-11 in 1984. It would be comparable.

Enterprise + Airwing cruise

http://www.gonavy.jp/CV-CVN65f.html

CVW-11 1984

http://www.gonavy.jp/CVW11-NH1984.html

Hope that helps.

Good day,
I was going through my stash the other day. I found a 1/600 scale enterprise. It looks like a knock off of the Tamiya kit. Not sure of the name or if truly 1/600. Since I am not sure of the scale and additional aircraft that will be needed. I would like do the last intruder cruise because I love the air wing. Any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks
Major-B

I have a 1/600 kit of USS Enterprise CVN-65. It's made by Kangnam Model... If that is the same one, the answer is yes for it being a Tamiya knockoff/reproduction in a smaller scale. As far as I know, it is 1/600. But, I have not measured the length & done the calculations with the length of the real CVN-65. I will get the kit out later and do that. And take a pic or two to post...

On HLJ's page, they have a 1/600 CVN-65 kit by Microace. Is this the same kit as the Kangnam Model one I have? I have no idea. But, I would guess that it is.

Microace is more usually known as Arii.
