As far as I know, that is correct, the Tamiya kit for the POW should work for either ship as it appeared early. Looking at my 2 kits, it would be much more difficult to backdate the KGV kit.

I hope this helps.

I'll second that.... :thumbs_up_1:

There are some differences in the aft superstructure I think and the light AA arrangement but nothing of major importance. Some good references and plans will help you turn the PoW into an early KGV. Also if you are interested, Heller offers an early version KGV at 1/400 but I would go for the Tamiya kit.

Hello everyone,
I recently bought the Tamiya PoW, 1/350, and have noticed that there are a few different PE sets for it. Does anyone know which is the best, i.e. the most comprehensive and complete? Also, does anyone produce barrels?
Cheers,
John

When was Duke of York's extended platform fitted on the aft funnel? Was it some time in 1943?

thanks
Mike

Hello Mike,

although I am not an expert regarding this class, I've found in A.Raven Ensign 1 that "Between December 1942 and March 1943, she was refitted at Rosyth". The next refit and partial modernisation began at Liverpool on 18 September 1944.
Therefore, it is most likely IMHO, that the extended platform fitted on the aft funnel was done at Rosyth.

cheers

Hi John,

I too am working on a PoW and backdating her to Battle of Denmark Strait. I have the WEM "Ultimate PE" set. I am new to PE (and modelling in general) so from a novice who is only picking and choosing which parts of the PE to use I would say "it's good". I think Tom's and GMM also do a KGV class PE set.

In regard to Barrels, I got my 14" and 5.25" from BMK. I think the website was www.modellmarine.de

Go to this website and click on the "Shop" tab in the top left corner of the page. Then when the next page is loaded, you will see "Gun Barrels" in the top left corner.

I am now having terrible fun working out the best way to attach the buggers to the gun house's.

Good luck with your PoW!

Blue

Hi Blue,
Thank you very much for your response. I also want to build it for the battle of Denmark Straight, but as a beginner I just hope I can finish it! I did in fact choose the WEM PE and hope to get it soon. I don't know which is best, but it will certainly do the job. The info about the barrels is also much appreciated, as there is no way I will be able to drill the holes straight in the plastic ones. Please also let me know how you attach them to the gunhouses. No doubt I will bugger that up.
Cheers
John

Hello again,

Well, the WEM PE set arrived today :woo_hoo:

I have my work cut out for me, that is for sure.

However, a question. What are parts 3 and 13 (5.25" Armoured Windows, Left and Right)? I know this was asked before, but I never found an answer.

Also, in this thread someone says that during the Battle of Denmark Straights, POW turrets had "UP mounts," later replaced by pompoms. Forgive this question from a landlubber, but what are UP mounts?

Cheers,
John

UP stands for "Unrotated Projector", basically a rocket launcher used for AA purposes:

Hi Timmy,
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Now, do you know where I can get my hands on such a device?

Cheers,
John

This is a question about the Oerlikons on the Tamiya 1/350 POW.

As per kit instructions I drilled the three holes at the rear of the ship and glued in the three Oerlikon tubs. However, I subsequently saw in Roberts a photo of the POW in August 1941 (the great photo with the Repulse in the background) which shows quite clearly that there were none fitted. Also on the schematic diagram in Roberts of the KGV, which indicates armament placement and modifications, there is no indication that POW had these fitted at the rear.
(I know, I know, research first, glue second ...)
Does anyone know if they were fitted after August 1941? If not it appears that Tamiya made a mistake (which I then followed, it being far too late to remove them without damage to the deck :pout:)

Raven and Roberts make no mention of oerlikons ever being fitted to the POW. However, Whitely ( Battleships of WW2) states that she received 7 oerlikons in December 1941, three on the quarterdeck, four on the bridge. For what it's worth Profile Morskie also concur with this layout. Despite Raven and Roberts being such a definitive text I tend to believe that the Tamiya kit layout is correct. It seems that oerlikons could be fitted and removed in a short space of time, and if they were fitted in December 1941 then the POW had little time left to be photographed with this fit

I would be careful with the Profile Morskis. They show great detail but from my experience with HMS Hood, I find that most follows from "filling out the blanks" plausibly but nearly always wrong. This comment does not refer to the presence of the Oerlikons in particular.

John,

PoW had 7 Oerlikons when sunk in December 1941. Two were low either side of the bridge (port side pair visible in picture of her arriving at Singapore), and the quarterdeck trio are visible in a photo of her departing Singapore. So they were certainly fitted prior to December 1941. Some have speculated that they were fitted in South Africa on the outward voyage, but perhaps more likely in the UK prior to deployment to the Far East.

Cheers.
