Wow - nice work mate.

This is my first post in a long long time, and I'm heaps impressed with the fourm changes from a few years ago. These groupings are fantastic . I'm currently doing some casual reasearch into the SoDak over the last few weeks, but after discovering this today, it may get a bit more intense.

...I think the ammo drums look a tad over-scale but .030" styrene rod looked too small...oh well...they look good to me!

I am ALMOST too embarrassed to post this ship in the middle of Dave Hill's build, since it is the same ship, same camo and even backdated to 1944 as is Dave's. Consider it an OOB build with Tom's PE, with only the reconstruction required to go back to 1944.

If anyone would like a list of the mods required to go back to 1944, let me know and I will put them on this post.

Nicely done, Jim. While Dave is a tough act to follow, he had no such difficulty. I think the last Mamie build in this thread was mine, and it's downright pathetic!

I remember your build...it looks pretty good to me!!!!!!! (any more pics?)...one question though...you and Jim's models look virtually identical in color...What colors did you use?...is that the Revised 1945 Navy Gray version of MS22?

Not for me... Just the wrong colors. I hadn't yet heard of the specific formulas available, so I used the wrong Tamiya colors.

Got a request for mods necessary to covert Trumpeter's 1/350 1946 Massachusetts to 1944. Will list the changes starting from the bow and going to the stern, all dimensions are decimal inches on the 1/350 model. These changes are taken from a 1/500 drawing made by Alan Chesley and published in "Ships Data - USS Massachusetts BB-59". This book is a BARGAIN, $6.99. Go to Battleshipcove.org, the store to order it.

1 Two quad 40mm near bow. Tub transverse CL (center line) is 2.95" from bow, outside edges of tub flush with hull. Directors in standard tubs (not elevated), forward of and touching the 40mm tub, slightly inboard from 40mm tub longitudinal CL. Dave Hill's posts have discussed the billboard notch under the port gun.

2 Top of #2 16" turret. One quad 40mm, one director and tub and two wing 20mm, identical to set up on #3 16".

3 Delete searchlight and platform on front face of primary director tower (part F-7), fill hole. Mount two large searchlights P and S on part F-26. Put small searchlight on part G-14.

4 Kit is missing the primary signal yard. Part is 2.40" long, .040" in diameter at max - tapered towards the ends. Made mine from a .040" sewing needle. Part is located on front face of primary director tower, just below part F-24

5 Air search radar is flat, rectangular SK, not the round parabolic SK2. 5" director radar does have the side "orange peel".

5B There are 4 "steam escape pipes" (do not know their name - safety blowdown tube?) on the aft sides of the funnel, 2 port and 2 stbd. The kit HINTS at them with a thin line and a curly end. Replaced with .045" dia brass rod.

6 The mainmast (aft of funnel) just has a SG radar on platform facing aft.

7 The 20mm gallery P and S of #3 16" barrels has just 2 guns per side rather than the 3 per side with the kit (I missed this one on my build).

8 Paint Meas 22, hull 5N below sheer line, 5H above, decks 20B. The kit painting instruction shows a "legal" meas 22 with a sliver of 5H on the aft 1/3 of the hull. Pictures of the 1944 ship (and M Donegan's box art) show that there was no 5H hull sliver on the aft portion of the hull, the 5N went all the way to the deck.
