Post '37 and before 1941 makeover(Golden Gate Bridge). That's the way I remember it. I'm glad you're the one chasing UFOs. Its great you're blowing the dust off this info but its hard to say for a fact that every photo IS the Arizona and that it is the date you(or anyone else) says it is. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, just saying its tough to know for sure. But keep it coming!!! You've discovered many great Trumpeter errors.

Does anyone have any feedback on the new Arizona 1/200 photo etch releases? The boat cradles and details look very interesting but I'm not certain about the accuracy. You can see them at their web site under Infoeduard.

I'm interested to hear your feedback.

I am working on the USS Arizona in her late configuration (blue, red tops), but not in the sense that it will exactly match December 1941. More of a display piece to represent her.

I would like to add some signal flags along one side for visual interest. Any ideas on what flags to use? I didn’t want to just arbitrarily add a bunch of signal flags, but have a row that would actually be used on the Arizona at some point. I was looking at the cover of the Stillwell book trying to figure out what flags were used on that painting. Haven’t had much luck researching the flags on the net. Any suggestions?

- Thanks!

Not sure if you can tell what flags are here but it may help a bit.

Thanks for those pictures, I’ll work on identifying the flags tomorrow. Give me something to do at work on a Friday. :heh:

I came across this forum while looking for information on one of my favorite ships, the namesake of my state, the USS Arizona, I read thru all 80 pages of information and when I was done I thought you might like to see my project so far. It is the Trumpeter 1/200 scale with the photo etch pack and Artworx wood deck. The only modification I have done it to drill out all the portholes and put LED lighting behind them. I have installed 50+ 5mm LEDS thru out the hull and towers.
Nothing in completed as of yet, I have building up sub assemblies and painting as I go, then touching up paint as I build.
I had to see how it looked so far

there is still a lot to do with the lighting such as figuring out where to put the batteries and switches, routing the wire bundles and so on.

Looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see the finished product. You should do a detailed report of your progress on the WIP section.

I'm thinking of starting my 1/700 Arizona and have a few quick questions - please don't make me read through all 80 pages!

First of all, I've no idea where the debate stands nowadays on whether she was Blue or Grey at Pearl Harbour and quite frankly I don't really care! I want to paint her in the prewar Grey scheme, as she was definitely Grey at some point prior to Dec 7th!

So, the main thing I need to check is the steel deck colour - would this have been the same colour as the vertical surfaces?

The other question relates to the turret tops. I've heard stuff about them being painted Red ( I think!). Is this true and if so, when were they painted Red and what sort of Red shade was it?

Please no arguments, sarcasm, insults etc!

thanks
Mike

No it's darker, in 700 sc it's no big deal. Try the WEM site for more info if you want. hth

Horizontal steel decks were #20 Standard Deck Grey.

Turret tops were red from at least 1938. (note turret 3 did not get the red top, since the catapult was on it)

As to the exact shade, I'll leave that for someone more knowledgeable, but I think it's in the realm of what you might call "insignia red".

This is the popular thought but just like the blue/gray controversy of late '41, there is the deck gray/linoleum brown controversy for her pre MS-1 days. To date no hard evidence supports either conclusion.

I would hesitate to call linoleum a controversy, just a question or possibility. We've found absolutely nothing save one photo to suggest it.

Just thought of another quick question. Did Arizona have any railings on her turrets like IJN battleships? All the pics I've seen are inconclusive.

thanks
Mike

Perhaps this will help answer your question. http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=154513

You say Tomato, I say Tomato! For every color photo of a Standard Navy Gray Battleship with deck gray steel decks you can show me, I can show you one with brown linoleum :wave_1:

Does anyone know what make and model of the secondary directors on the lower levels of the fighting tops? I know that there were Mk 20 on the upper levels. Thanks, Jon

I thought the forum would like to the see the Arizona Memorial at the state capital in Phx AZ
As you approach from the west, looking east, some things are placed is such a way to give a idea the size of the ship
this would be as if you were on the stern looking forward, the far center flag pole in front of the Anchor would be the bow
Image

The first part of the Arizona put on display was the anchor
Image

a number of years later the Signal Mast
Image

Then in the last year were the biggest changes with the addition of two main gun barrels, one from the Arizona, the other from the Missouri
The Arizona 14in Main gun, this gun was on the Arizona at one time, but was removed for relining and was installed on the Nevada at the time of Pearl Harbor

The Missouri 16in main gun

The Arizona sign boards

The Missouri sign boards

From the Anchor looking West toward the Capitol

The Nine pillars between the guns are for the nine minutes it took the Arizona to sink
Image

Something I could not resist

The Breech of the Arizona 14in main gin
Image

With a main turret from my Trumpeter 1/200 scale USS Arizona in the center guide hole

Anchor of the USS Arizona

Oh, and that little speck on the foot of the anchor is the 1/200 scale anchor

Thanks for the pics...seeing your turret and anchor on the real thing puts things into perspective. Just finished participating in RIMPAC 2014 I got the chance to see the Arizona Memorial and also toured the Mighty Mo and standing in front of those guns made an impression on me for sure...got some pretty cool pictures as well.
