Radar: It was other photo's I have which hinted at radar (including if memory recalls one of Barham refuelling Eridge in the Med.)

I'm looking for some help trying to understand where the W/T aerials are connected. I can't see any aerial trunk on the aft superstructure and I suppose that they end somewhere on the main mast starfish.

From the main board people may have picked up that according to the Hannants website, the Academy 1/350th "Queen Elizabeth" will actually be "HMS Warspite".

No details, but at least a catalogue number.

The old Airfix Warspite was my first ever warship model as a kid.



The idea of a new 1:350 scale Warspite is really exciting; she was such a characterful member of the QE class, as the whole class were, but Warspite perhaps slightly more so.

One lucky find again. HMS VALIANT 1944.

congrats to the fine work and enormous dedication depicted in this thread!

I am in the process of building the Airfix Warspite, a favorite kit of my youth, but this time as beached in Prussia Cove on her abortive last journey.

I have the Raven/Roberts volume, the new shipcraft book (with input from many of you, a very nicely done book in book, so to speak), I have several other images and I am waiting for the AOTS book which is somewhere in the mail between the UK and here.

One question I havent solved yet (and from what I heard from an owner of the AOTS book, it doesn´t either) is how the former catapult deck was used after the aircraft installations were removed. The Raven/Roberts book has six single Oerlikons placed there, but I so far found no more info.

In other ships, the space was used for boat storage so that more prominent areas were available for more AA - so this might be true, but I haven´t found info yet.

Furthermore, when the aircraft installations were removed, the starboard hangar was converted to a cinema. Has anyone an idea whether the hangar doors were retained or replaced? I have seen one photo taken during scrapping that looks as if the original hangar door might still be in place, but am not sure.

My take is that weapons, boats and radars had been removed at Portsmouth already, but that boat cradles and differently colored areas of deck would remain where baots and weapons had been - would you consider that approach correct?

Hello gents!

It seems that 2011 is going to be the Queen Elizabeth class year! Academy is coming with a rebuilt HMS Warspite 1/350, while Trumpeter is working at the QE as seen in 1941, always 1/350.

I’m planning on building the HMS Malaya as seen in 1943 in 1/700 scale. I figured the best place to start was with the WEM HMS Barham model, the contents of which are seen in detail here: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... sAOy5-SoBA

I have, or will have by the time I start, enough reference materials and plans for the conversion. My planned bill of materials then is:

WEM HMS Barham
WEM Queen Elizabeth class photo etch for WWII: http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/brochu ... mpe734.jpg If you look closely (upper right part of fret), this actually has a section of parts for the Malaya.
GMM Ultra Fine railings
Master Models 15” brass barrels

Now, do any of you experts on the QE class, see any major issues with this approach? To me it appears the hull would need very little modification and the conversion would be mainly scratch built superstructure work.

Please chime in if you have any comments.

Gentlemen,

There are two editions of the AOTS on the Warspite, from 1991 and 2002 respectively. Is the 2002 edition significantly better than the earlier? What is offered that wasn't before? I've tried to search for reviews but can't find one that compares the two editions.

Getting ready for the Trumpy kit....

What plans and references do you have for your conversion?

The main reference I'll have (should be here in a few days) is the Profile Morskie plan book on the Malaya.
For general arrangement on the QE class, I have the Queen Elizabeth Class Battleships by Les Brown, The Battleship Warspite (Anatomy of the Ship) by Ross Watton and Queen Elizabeth class (Warship monographs 2) by Campbell.

Admittedly, if the Profile Morskie book doesn't have detailed enough plans, this project will probably be a non-starter. Plan B is back dating the WEM Queen Elizabeth 1918 to model the Malaya as she appeared in 1916. This would definitely be an easier conversion!

This is interesting, but you should keep in mind that almost all above the main deck was different, I think that this project is possible, but with a lot of work.
