Re: Calling all RM Vittorio Veneto-class fans!
I'm finishing up my Trumpeter 1/350 Roma (first ship model since '67) and would recommend the Pictorial for camo reference rather than the Trumpeter instructions or the otherwise very nice Littorio Class book. And you'll need to decide WHEN for the scheme, as it changes a bit between the initial application and the somewhat modified finish it ended up with. The photos in the pictorial will help. Also, the recognition stripes ought to be at a 45degree angle, pretty much as per the Pictorial art. The Trumpeter instructions are mega off. And a tip when masking, the deck texture can help with getting the angle correct. The stripes work out to be about 6.5mm.
I'm new here and kind of stoked about this ship modeling stuff, also I jumped ahead so apologize ahead of time if this all was covered previously.

To Giampiero re: 2nd Sirte drawings:
Both photo's from Bagnasco & de Toro ( U.S. Edition )
This photo captioned 23 March 1942, returning from battle ( p.220)

This photo captioned 13 May 1942, "repainting in progress" ( p.115 )

Both photos show the "Hybrid" camo you illustrated, but with the "foul white" patch on the stern - I assume also at the bow ???
Could either or both of the dates be wrong ? It would seem by the first picture that the upper works of Littorio had been repainted before 2nd Sirte.
The second photo shows how much darker the fresher upper dark gray is than the old dark gray on the hull, IF they are the same color ?? I've noticed the "lighter" dark gray in photos and the YouTube video, which is not easily explained by film type or exposure. ( look at the VV photo on p.114 for example)
I'm currently working on another project ( 350th DKM Z-30 ) to polish up some rusty skills before tackling paint and your photo-etch on my 700th Littorio - which will probably be in this scheme. Any definitive documentary or better photo evidence that the bow stripes were gone? - these photos are inconclusive.

No need to post the pic - I believe you.
I suppose that the stripes were over-painted during the application of the new camo - so I'll take creative license and keep them - heavily faded and weathered - assuming they were painted after the upper new camo but before the sortie
I'll also leave the white hull patches fore and aft.
The photos appear to me to have been taken at the same time - note the sea state, and the position of the forward turrets.
Still interested in your comments on the dark gray shades upper and lower.

I must admit that the Roma camo scheme has proven to be a colossal PITA!
I was expecting the stripes to be the tough part. Not the case.

The cammo is nightmareish, but worth the effort. I'm nearly done with my Roma and she is particularly striking. All I have left to do is finish adding the skirts to the 90mm gun turrets and some of the railings and other little bits.

The Roma will be my first 1/350 battleship with PE.I'm certain I could have picked an easier one to get broken in on!

Hi Falcon,
There is a photo of February 1942 in which the strips are heavily faded and weathered.
To camouflage the dark gray of the hull I use Humbrol 140, while the dark gray of the mimetic superstructure Humbrol 67
Ciao

Giampiero or Secondo a quick question, the AA suit for the Vitorrio Veneto(1940) that Trumpeter suggest is wrong ?
Same also for 1940 Littorio.
Thank in advance.

Re: Calling all RM Vittorio Veneto-class fans!
Apologies if this has already been posted, but this video is a must see:
15 minutes of film mostly aboard a Vittorio Veneto class battleship (presumably Vitorio Veneto herself at the Cape Matapan action) with sound and commentary, seems to be a documentary/training type film. It gives an amazing insight into the much of the ship, including the bridge, director tower, engine room and boiler room areas, magazines in operation, main armement turrets in action and various other areas inside the ship and externally, all in full operation with the crew.
This is great, really brings the vessel to life to see all her internal workings come to life, this is good to see on behalf of any great battleship, but particularly for this Italian one.

Fantastic video! I lost track of the number of scenes that were repeated, but they were far overshadowed by the fascinating scenes inside the boiler rooms and magazines, as well as a detailed view of loading operations of a 381/50! Plus, as a bonus, video of Warspite's famous hit on Cavour!!! Thank you for finding this!!

This looks like a nice set,but it might be beyond my current capabilities.I really like the parts for the lifeboats.I drilled out some of the windows, but the rest are gonna be a PITA to paint.mermaid wrote:Has anyone seen the new Roma 1/350 set by Flyhawk?
