Thank you. What about hammocks above the bulwarks (catwalk level)? I guess there's no way the men could get up there.

LOL Ironclad, now I need few days to think about your post and check all those wonderfull links you have so kindly provided! :thumbs_up_1: :thanks:

Bandoman - here is the photo of hammock storage on Borodino. This photo is from construction period and, when ship was operational, openings were covered with fabric curtains.

Not sure if I understand your question correctly but Borodino didn't have any hammock storage on platforms on main or secondary bridges. Orel did.

Thank you Darius. I thought those were some kind of cabin, although now it makes sense. I painted those openings black, so I guess on my model they are open and empty.
I understand about the upperworks not having hammock stows on Borodino (my current subject).

Bondoman! I afraid, I misunderstood Your previous post. I meant wall on sparedeck between fore and aft bridges (bulwark) is really a wall of hammock storages (steel wardrobes). Hammock storages also mounted on bridges (low walls).

You are right John, I am sorry.

And one more correction Bandoman: there was something on Borodino's aft bridge which probably was a hammock storage in the same style as one shown on the photo posted by John.

Hi Bondoman,
here is a plan that perhaps shows the location of the hammock stores on the upper bridges. I am not sure if it is accurate or not and to be honest I am not that interested in Borodino and feel I have already put a lot of work into describing her. Green for the upper bridges, red for the lower.

The only storage I can be confident about on the aft bridge is number 1 in this fragment:
Image
which corresponds with this location (provided by John):
Image
I am still not sure if no.2 was a hammock storage (it could have been mind you) because of this view of Borodino forward bridge (taken from the same photo as first the fragment):
Image
What can be seen here was almost certainly not a hammock storage and yet it looks identical to what can be seen in location 2 in the first fragment.

I am very unsure about hammock storage on the forward bridge. Now, I am not saying that they weren't there, just that I can't spot anything which would look to me like a likely candidate in any of the photos of Borodino in my collection.

You haven't outstayed your welcome, but I think I have when discussing Borodino. If my ideas are thought not to be worth discussing as someone has said, then I am not sure there is much point in me continuing.

John I am truly sorry if I have offended you! I have deleted this part of my post because I haven't expressed my self correctly. What I meant was to say was that because we can't agree on this particular subject there is no point arguing and it's better to to leave if off until (or if) more evidence becomes available.

Please accept my apology?

Yes of course, I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post. It did come across as a strong rejection of my ideas and having read it, I couldn't unread it even though you deleted it. My ideas may be rubbish, but I would have liked to have discussed my rubbish.

cerberusjf is absolutely right.
The fragment no. 2 on the aft bridge is a hammock storage.
It proves to be true by photos and original drawings.

I am so glad that this incredibly animated and detailed discussion between expert analysts is still succeeding in maintaining the cordial flavour of gentlemen!

After a bit of study of Bouvet with jf

- the stunning in-depth of this discussion is most enjoyable. !!!

At some stage I shall tackle a Borodino class ship...(

and prevent building an ' era and ship amalgam ' of the class

( remember our first meeting on smml Darius! ? - no hubris here!! :heh: )

Keep it going and play nicely--this is a primary focal point for many a Borodino studiers!!

All the ebst

OK shipmates. I found Kronma's post of 11/3/07 with the excellent funnel comparison drawing. To be clear, the one shown for Borodino matches pretty close to the model. I suspect that's because eastern express probably used those drawings.
The funnels look taller in photos, like they are at the level of the yard on the foremast.
But then I noticed something. The funnels on the other ships look taller too, like they are about level with the top. Of course it's hard to tell because all of these photos were made from near the waterline.
And Borodinos are clearly shorter. There's a nice trio of pictures back in there, taken of three ships from near the bow, down by the water. You can see it there, by almost a funnel diameter.
So my conclusion is that the drawing I referred to is probably pretty close to correct.
Has anyone arrived at a different or more detailed conclusion.
I bought some brass tube to make new funnels with, in order to get rid of all the horrible plate detail and seaming on the kit parts. Plus, they come out a little oval.
Before i go cutting it up, was curios to know.
A dimension up from the deck, or any datum except the keel would be ideal.

Thank you!

I hope, that it can be useful for you.
It will help to construct your fine model correctly.
The sizes of a funnels are taken from the original drawing.

Thank you Kronma. This is for the larger ones since it has external steam pipes, correct?

I will post pictures this weekend. The weather has been bad and there's no good light, so it will have to be indoor light. Yechh.

This is kind of a hard railing project because of all of the curves, not like a modern ship! But the result is graceful and old fashioned (of course).

I wish my 12" barrels would show up!
