Is that trumpeter rear tripod too high or what, you have it going down to the deck right?

I was just using that picture as an example of the tripod mounting.

By the way, can any AZ fans tell me what those big multi decked fighting tops where intended for? was it filled with spotters with binoculars during a battle?

They housed spotting equipment for the 5"/51 broadside guns and all of the other guns too I believe. The higher vantage point was often preferred in a battle.

Hi Guys,
A little more progress with Dragon's 1/700 Arizona.
The bridge base was open and incorrect..just incomplete to put it one way.
After studying the 1/96 Az pics and the Chesley drawings, I added a face to the bridge base. I also added the foremast center leg that goes down below the main deck, (on teh real ship). It was actually easier to drill a hole through the boat deck and let the tube be too long and penetrating, than to cut it to an exact length.
Tracy,
I did not see this detail in any of the Chesley drawings in the Stillwell book. Did I miss something? Is the tube coming down through the boat deck a tube, or was there a "box" around it?
see pic........

Here is the bridge section in place showing the obvious changes made.
Very simple, but once painted....only we will know.
Image

Here is the foremast center leg coming through the 02 level....

Simple enough, but the correctness is there. I know, I know...how many corrections will I CHOOSE to make? That's THE question. I have already noticed inclined and vertical ladders everywhere...that I could add on without a whole lot trouble. I might!
B-day dinner tonight...gotta go.
Tony

Check it out.. Page 373 (Hey, USS Shaw's hull number!), "Superstructure Deck Level" You can see a square around the vertical mast; there's a watertight door shown on the forward line of this box... that means it's a bulkhead.

Look on page 371, Space 89... this is that same area. The mast extends quite a ways down, as you can see.

The plans I'm referencing are the same ones in the background of Tony's photos.

They were drawn by Alan Chesley and are the best out there in terms of quality and accuracy, but as they were reproduced in the Paul Stillwell book they're a little small; for larger scale use one has to operate both from the Chesley plans and the Floating Drydock set(s); the later for shapes, the former to find the numerous errors in the FDD plans before they get transferred to the model...

Hey all,

Can any one help me,I went to "floating drydock" for plans drawn by Alan E Chesley and they didn't have any listed. There were some Arizona plans but not the ones drawn bt Mr. Chesley. It would be really great if some one could push me in the right direction.

The Chesley drawings are in "Battleship Arizona: an Illustrated History" By Paul Stillwell. The floating drydock set are not drawn by Mr Chesley.

They do list them under the Chesley section but they are NOT drawn by Chesley. I gave up arguing with Tom as it wasn't worth my time. Save yourself the money and stay away from his *Chesley* Arizona plans. The TFW plans are the same thing and, while they have errors in details, the hull lines are as good as anything.

You can see a discussion of the Chesley plans here as well.

Well guys, Tony had a jump on me on this one, but I have started on the Banner 1/350 Arizona. I have installed the docking keels to the lower hull. I am waiting for the Toms PE set to arrive at my local hobby shop so I can use the timplates to install the bilge keel.

In the mean time, I am removing the moulded on details that will be replaced and drillling out the port holes. I will be using both GMM and Eduards sets on this build. The Eduard set in much better in life than on the screen of their web site. The chains look pretty good and I am undecided to the PE or chain.

I will try to post some pics when I am more advanced.

Keep at em boys!!

Hi Guys,
There is still some touching up to do, but here are Arizona's main battery(s) in fairly complete fashion............
Image
Close up..........

The barrels/blast bags are from Clipper Models, the turrets are the cast white metal ones from the Dragon kit. The primer used by the manufacturer on the turrets was pretty thick, as one got chipped pretty good when I accidentally dropped one of the turrets to the floor. Dropping partsand losing parts......could be a thread topic of its' own!
Tony
ps Dick, it's good to see you're in it!

Hi Guys,
Dick,
I used Testors Model Master Acryl Insignia Red, with a little white added. The turret was 5-S first, so I had to apply a few..thin coats.
They looked pretty bright till I got used to it.
I am trying to decide what to name my Arizona display, (when it's finished), as I will have a Kingfisher flying overhead. The color coded turret tops were to allow spotter aircrews to quickly identify ships in their battleship squadron; I do believe.
I figured something like, "..Herb...the red turret tops...!"

Hi Guys,
I am officially pumped on this build. I can't wait to get back to it.
I've probably spent 8 hours, (collectively), this past week...just at work!
Can you say, "obsess much"????????
More pics soon, Tony

Hey Guys,

I was wondeering if anyone has some pics of the inside the navigating bridge anh the flag bridge. I have the Stillwell book, but I can't find any inside shots of the bridge. I like modeling the insides of ship's bridge sometime just to do something different.

Hi Guys,
I am taking a few steps forward, and one step back.
The GMM BB set is pre-primed and painted 5-S. The tripods are finished except for filling in the windows and adding the railings. There are a bunch of ladders to be added; not to mention the deck railings. Railings come later. I copied the 1/96 Arizona by adding some external plumbing to the aft end of the funnel. The Dragon instructions show to add on one plumbing piece, but to the wrong side. In an effort to keep things closer to scale, I have used Evergreen plastic dowels for the funnel details. The blast bags need to be painted too. I decided to spray as much of the raised deck details rather than brush paint all of them. With the deck tan color painted some time ago, and then getting 5-S overspray everywhere, I decided to re-paint the decks; so there will be some masking awaiting me. After building the CV-17 in Ms32-6A, I fear no mask job! This is the stepping back part.

Here is my finished sub-assembly stash awaiting final assembly.......
Image

Here are some of the sub-assemblies in place........

Closer........

In order to keep this interesting.......I will slow up on picture posting till I get further along.
Tony

Looking good Tony. One thing I've always disliked about the Dragon kit is that the Fighting tops look like diapers, with the bottom sectioned angled like that when its supposed to be several triangular braces, not a big solid piece.
