Hi Guys,

Just like Timmy's posted article says, it is a waterline hull with a bottom hull section in the kit. I have heard that it is a bit of a rough fit in places from other sources, but I am a waterline hull fan so it is of little concern to me. It is a pretty happening kit from what I can see in the box, they pretty well give you everything in one box, PE, brass main gun barrels, Cartograph decals and no soft vinyl stuff for this edition. The only thing I can see that needs some work is the dreaded "Aztec Temple" steps in a few places, but nothing too major for the average ship modeler to overcome.

I will wait on building it to get the Stillwell book from Naval Institute Press and I do have a few other planned projects happening at the moment. I want to, clear the decks, so to speak before I turn my attentions to it.

This isn't necessarily Arizona related, but I'm working on the Banner kit now, converting it to Arizona's sister ship Pennsylvania. Going to try and have it done by December 7th too!

I edited the first post to this thread, adding some of the stuff back that we lost.

Hi everybody! Regarding the battleship Arizona I have two different sketches, Paul Stillwell´s (Battleship Arizona An Illustrated History) and Floating Drydock´s (TFV-BB39/16). Now looking into these it seems they are a bit contradictory and I was wondering which of them would be the most authentic regarding the measurements of the ship. There are differences for example at the chair locker area and the air raid cannons in the Drydock´s sketch seem to be 1,1 ".

Best regards,

Jarmo Venäläinen

Has anyone used WEM's ultimate Arizona PE set for a 1/350 Arizona?

Charles Landrum's review on rollmodel compares Tom's & GMM.

I think I'm going to use either WEM or GMM, but I wanted to get some opinions first.

Thanks

Bob

I've got 'em all. The WEM set looks nice but I haven't started using it yet... I'm waiting for the color controversy to be settled.

I got my new issue of World War II magizine yesterday, and the main story is about one of the surviviors from the AZ that was onboard and in the gun directors station. Well in the story the show a hand sketch of how the AZ is sitting today that was done by the Historic American Building for the National Park Service. When I saw this I was like cool because I have a copy of the original and I also have a prot side elevation and a scale of 1"=40'. Both of which look great and help anyone working on a sunken version of her.

Here is the bow perspective drawing.

Hi guys,

I've been working with Burkhardt Masch at modellmarine.de on some brass barrels for my Arizona.

I got examples of his 14"/45's and 5"/51's today in the mail, and I thought I'd share a few pics in case anyone else is thinking of getting them for their 1/350 Arizona.

They look a little thin to me; what was the source used to determine shape & size?

Tracy,

This was the drawing I provided to Burkhardt that he used to mill it:

While at Telford I talked to the nice chaps from l'Arsenal and they confermed that they are working on complete 5"/51 guns in 1/350! :thumbs_up_1: IIRC they will be ready some time next year. If this works out it opens a new detailing possibility - and even more building hours! - for the Banners' Arizona. :tongue:

This thread is for all fans of the US Battleship Arizona, BB-39.

Any question about her is welcomed and encouraged; she was a grand lady and I personally would love to help anyone pay proper tribute and respect to her in their model. Revell's box (1/426 in this case) scale model of her was the first ship model I built.

There are three readily available kits of her in plastic and some others in resin:

* Banner/Mini Hobbies (aka trumpeter) 1/350 plastic
* Revell 1/426 plastic
* Dragon/DML 1/700

Here are some reviews of these kits; the first is one I wrote for Internet modeler some time ago, mirrored here after it was taken offline:

* 1/350th Photo Etch (Manufacturer's page)
L'Arsenal (Many multiple separate sets):

* 5" /25 AA open mount Gun (Manufacturer's Page)
* a 5"/51 mount has been announced/alluded to but not released.
* Paravanes (Manufacturer's Page)
LionRoar
* 1/350th Photo-Etch (SteelNavy Review here, out of production apparently)
Toms Modelworks (multiple separate sets):
* USS Arizona photo-etch detail set (3528)
* USS Arizona Small Boat Detailing Set (3529)
White Ensign
* 1/350th Photo-etch (Manufacturer photo one and two)

I'd have linked to the Tom's pages directly but his URLs are incompatible with this message board software.

This post is for some additional information that pertains to models of Arizona.

The Banner/Mini Hobbies kit has some accuracy issues (and how!) but they're not show stoppers.

* The lower/upper hull is NOT broken at Arizona's 1941 waterline. It is close to the much lower 1921 line, but if you merely leave the bottom off you will have a ship that is at least ten scale feet too high out of the water. The below image (scanned and annotated from the Floating Drydock TFW series plans) shows the difference.

http://www.specwarnet.net/MW/AzWaterline.jpg

* I started this some time ago but never finished it... it still does contain good information regarding the Banner 350th kit.

At this time, this is the last known quality picture of Arizona before the attack, taken November 8, 1941 as she was in drydock following collision repairs. Note the rafts on the #2 turret barbette and superstructure.

One thing I would like to point out is that the 5"/51 broadside guns that were on the main deck were not in turrets; they were mounted in casemates that were basically bulkheads with wide slots for the gun barrel to poke through. You can see a little more of what they looked like in the third and fourth photographs on this Navweaps.com page and what the shutters appeared like on the bottom picture (even though it was a different ship). These guns were trained fore and aft when not in use, parallel to the axis of the ship. Many people point them outwards radially; do it if you wish but this is not what was done on Arizona herself.
