I too like these models and if you do onto the Marlborough topic, you will see a replica advertisement sign, in my Drydock (shed) of H.M.S. Ocean, representing the Ocean Insurance Company in 1890.
Now a model of that ship would be worth having a go at, if plans are available. :thumbs_up_1:

HMS Ocean.....

GWF was United States but okay, i'll accept that. I guess most ships looked the same then, and they all look wonderful in the white and yellowish whatever.

Okay Kenny, you are right, but the British Navy had the same colour scheme during the Victorian period, so you could also say, that they were of the GWF. :thumbs_up_1:

yeah, i guess we can expland. They were all beautiful anyways. I think its more the color than the ship itself that sets them apart.

Does Great White Fleet conveniently include all US predreadnoughts up to that point? 'Cuz I'm working on modelkrak USS Brooklyn, have combrig USS Baltimore on order and have the combrig Olympia and Chicago on my wishlist. White and buff, every last one of them. Anxiously awaiting the combrig Maine.

Since I'm working in 1:700, I was wondering what PE fret other people use for predreadnought american models. I use the HMS Chester fret from WEM and their Askold fret, but with so many parts custom designed it feels like a loss. Any better generic predreadnought pe sets out there?

Im sorry to say it does not, The Great White Fleet was a fleet of battleships that sailed round the world to fly the American flag, and Brooklyn was not part of it, Kenny,s only just got in , being in the 3rd Division, were as USS VERMONT was in the 1st Division. :lol_3: :lol_3: :lol_3: :jump_1: :jump_1: :thumbs_up_1:

not all ships of the great white fleet did the world tour tho....or so i believe. All ships of the USN at that time painted white and buff were part of the fleet were they not? its only the best or so sailed the world. Cant send them all and leave us naked without any guns to defend ourselfs!

Yes well the GWF may have only included the USN's BBs but the American navy of the time was overall visually impressive.

Though I always look at the pictures of Kearsarge's visit to Great Britain and I am Always struck by how small and puny she looks next to the RN Pre-Dreadnoughts. They seem to tower over her and look out and out much more powerful. admittedly the Kearsarge was 5 years old by the time she made this trip (1905) and there were much newer ships in the US Fleet but the images always made me wonder how good relative to other navies the Americans were in the days of the GWF.

Anybody have a good answer?

Yes all the ships were painted buff and white , but to be part of the Great White Fleet you had to be in the 1st ,2nd 3rd, or 4th Division that sailed round the world, that was the name they were given, ARH

Well Kearsarge was only 375ft the largest was the Connetticut Class at 456ft, were as Dreadnought was 520 ft , so the difference between Kearsage and Dreadnought was 145ft that would make it look punny, thats why they were called PRE-DREADNOUGHTS, ARH

GRAY in America, GREY in England, your spellings a are sometimes different to ours. I's like Gas, for cars, we call it Petrol.

I`ve a ISW Commander series 1/700 scale USS KEARSARGE painted in white and buff.

Other period ships of USN in G.A.`s fleet include USS OLYMPIA and USS BALTIMORE.
