Linoleum was the standard covering for the aircraft handling decks, and the only reason why one would see the brass tie-down strips in that section of deck. FWIW.

Hi all,

I have bought the great new 1914 Kongo by Kajika, as well as the dedicated photo etch set.
This set came without instructions.

Could anybody who has this pe set send me a scan of the instructions, please?
My e-mail is peterrathgeb (at) hotmail.com.

Thanks a lot and cheers,
Peter

That was a misunderstanding - Frank thought I needed the plastic kit instruction (thanks anyway!).

What I need are the photoetch set instructions. Anybody have them?

Thanks to Ralf Schuster from NNT Modell I found a link with the .pdfs of the photoetch instructions. Thank you, Ralf!

A question: In which grey would Kongo be painted in 1914? She was "docked at Kure for inspection of turret rangefinders" in January, 1914. Would she also have been repainted (in Kure grey) on this occasion? If not, does anybody know?

Thanks and cheers,
Peter

Wow, that was some search. Glad Ralf was able to help.

The Kure Gray is as good a choice as any. Also, the IJN was still tinkering with paint formulations at this time, so I don;t think anyone can say what the paint truly was at that time, other than the standard formulation.

Thank you, Dan.

By the way, the Kongo in 1914 is such a beauty! And the Kajika kit is just great!

Cheers,
Peter

I hope my gallery pics will come here soon.
Here is my recap after building the kit:

Quote:
The kit comes from the company Kajika and which is a branch of Flyhawk. The quality of the kit is correspondingly good. Although there are now most Japanese ships available from the time of the Second World War, older or as in this case with a previous construction state are lacking. So a big thanks to Kajika in making this kit The model did not make any problems during construction, just like other Flyhawk kits. For this I used Kajika's etching parts, the main and middle artillery brass barrels and the mask for masking the wooden decks. The mask fitted perfectly and spared painstaking masking. Rather a disappointment were the etching parts, these were unusually rough compared to those of Flyhawk. I did not use the ladders since the steps could not be fold. Also the railing was too long here and there and had to be shortened. Thus the railing had no opening for the ladder in front of the D turret. Also I would have wanted a few etching parts for the anchors and cutters. So I took some of Flyhawk and Fstar model. Also to mention is, that no torpedo net included. However, pictures from the time of the testing in England show that none was on board yet. So this is correct for a certain time.

So plastic kit awesome, pe parts only usefull for beginners.

Greetings Christian

Christian,

Thank you very much for this review, and for the caveat concerning the photoetch.

I am just starting to build the kit.

I had also bought the wooden deck, and I am very happy with it. Comparing to other such "deck stickers" I have used before, I found it to be extremely thin, so that it does not add too much unwanted height. (at least for my "amateur" needs and expectations)

Cheers,
Peter

Sorry if this has been asked before and not having time to read all of the previous pages of this topic. Did the two barrels of the main battery elevate and lower in unison or where they capable of independent operation? Thank you.

Hmmmm. I thought they were independent. Currently out of town and can't confirm that.

This may have been covered before in the thread, but I cannot find it.

But in Samuel Elliot Morrison's The History of United States Naval Operations in World War Two, Volume 5: The Struggle for Guadalcanal, Morrison says that the Kongo and Haruna both got Search Radar (p. 199 of the Naval Institute Press Paperback) prior to the Battle of Santa Cruz.

Is that correct?

Would this have been the Type 21 Bedspring radar (assuming Morrison is correct)?

I was surprised to learn from her TROM that Kongo apparently received such a unit on August 1, 1942 at Kure. I don't recall coming across that piece of information before.

Nothing listed for Haruna.

Hello everyone

First time in.

I'm building a Fujimi's Haruna 1944 and as it appears 1/700 version is different from 1/350. I cannot find any exact referance about the upgrades in 1944 (there were two).
I then decided to invest in 3D Haruna by Kagero Publishing only to find out yet a third version of the ship.

Any help about how to make a 1/350 version most accurate is appreciated.
