New questions re HMS Repulse:

Regarding the Ready Use lockers for the aft HA guns...

Were they moveable and re-positioned from time to time?

Were their 1939 vs. 1941 positions the same?

Project HMS Repulse at the time of her sinking in Dec 1941 in 1/700.

Which is my best starting point as the Tamiya kit has issues which although fixed by the Admiralty Modelworks kit make it a very expensive kit at £30 for the model and £54 for the upgrade plus PE, etc, etc, etc.

Is the Trumpeter version more accurate or the same?

Less so. I would give it a miss and stick with the Tamiya kit.

Here's a picturee with a few images I found. Note the black/white colouring of the semaphores and the perforations.

The bottom left image is from HMS Hood, the rest of random ships to show the general shape (and how all etch parts I've seen so far are thus wrong).

Hi EJ
The 'wrong' semaphore etchings you've seen must have been copied from an earlier design of arm from their introduction to post WW1, that 'your' perforated version must be from between the wars and onwards.

2 images of the earlier 'design':

p.s. good catch!

Nice catch yourselves! I hadn't seen those earlier type semaphores before. not looking in the right direction, I guess? I don't know what year the earliest 'perforated' semaphore is from, but for Hood it's no later that 1918.

Im thinking of doing a diorama with Hms Repulse. I have a battlefleet models ship yo32 http://battlefleetmodels.com/id26.html that I want to be refueling her. Im wondering where would she be moored along side. Where would the fuel pipes go on Repulse and how would they be brought on board. Would repulse use one of its cranes to get the pipes on board?

Any help much appreciated.

At long last I completed my HMS Repulse and entered it in competition this weekend. If you want to take a look, there were photos posted in the "What's New" section of MW yesterday. Thank you all for your kind attention and support along the way.

The British fleet was accompanied by the USS Saratoga in 1944 from which some color footage was shot. HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Valiant, and HMS Renown are depicted in their well-known Admiralty Standard Camouflage Scheme A---G45 warm light grey overall and a B20 medium blue panel on the hull---and I noticed that the main turrets and non-vertical surfaces of the secondary armament are in the same tone of blue. You'll notice that these turrets appear darker on black & white footage as well, unlike the camouflage of other cruisers and battleships in the same scheme.

Thank you for your answers. :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Amitie,
I did the Trumpeter Repulse (350th) as she appeared in 1937/38,and she did wear the SNP stripes on "B" turret at that time.
For my WIP go here :
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=42516&hilit=hms+Repulse

Of Course I got the colours in the wrong order ,Red should be the foremost !!

Enjoy the build ,Phil

Hi All

Could anyone tell me what is the most detailed PE for the Trumpeter 1/350 Repulse, Eduard or WEM.

Thanks

Bill

I would say WEM. Although Eduard maybe easier to use.
If your feeling confident you might try the Flyhawk set (The most expensive option though)

Hi All

Can anyone tell me if the Trumpeter 1/350 kit camo pattern paints suggested are correct. If not what acrylic paints/colours would you suggest.

Thanks

Bill

Found this nice high-res shot of Reknown today on Flickr. Just right-click on the photo and click "original"

There are a few build logs in 'Picture Post' that will help.

I built Renown in 700 scale and used WEM colours for the main camp colours. I also used photographs rather than the camp patterns on either the WEM instructions (quite close) or the Profile Morskie drawings (not close enough).

The camouflage patterns on Renown changed a bit, very subtly, over quite a short time period and changed dramatically in the picture posted above. The best known Renown pattern is the one I used and was the result of a lot of photograph staring and measuring the shapes and sizes of the colour pattern using distances between portholes (as a known distance and then dividers and a scale rule.

You begin to see just how inaccurate most camo drawings are when you start to REALLY look at the pattern... but I'm pretty pleased with the accuracy of mine. You can follow the whole build thread here... camouflage is about four or five pages in...

http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=50923

You should check the WIP section a lot when you are building something... there is more information in that section than pretty much any section on the forum...

Good luck... and post your progress in Picture Post/Work In Progress :thumbs_up_1:
