Greetings!

I am currently building the 1/350 Tamiya USS Missouri as the USS New Jersey with her original open bridge using the old Tom's Model Works resin parts. However, there is a broken part on the resin parts and have looked for the open bridge in Shapeways. Does anyone know if they have one? If so, I cannot find it.

I have also ordered the parts from Shapeways to build another in the round bridge configuration. My goal is to build the New Jersey in all of her configurations for a display that I will call "The Life of a Battleship".

Thanks!

Bill Morrison

No, he's looking for the as-built open bridge with no windows.

The Iowa and the New Jersey were the only two ships of the Iowa Class to have been commissioned with the open bridge. New Jersey was converted soon after to the round bridge, then the square bridge.

Hi Bill,

Here's the 1943, as-commissioned "open bridge" in 1/350: http://shpws.me/OOGO

There are some detail differences between Iowa's open bridge and New Jersey's. This design captures many of those differences. The battle view slit shutters don't show up very well in the above rendering so I've included a different kind of rendering below that better shows them. The armored conning tower doors are open on the model and the conning tower's armor thickness is to scale. The model contains 3 parts to permit better interior access for painting.

Cheers!

Thanks so much, Bill!

Note that New Jersey had "angle-back" Mk.37 directors (and no cupola) as-built. The Missouri kit comes with the later "square-back" directors with commanders cupola. If you need angle-backs, here's the link: http://shpws.me/Obpc

Thanks again, to you, and all who have patronized Model Monkey.

Thanks! I just ordered a set of those directors. My goal is to build a collection of the New Jersey in each of her guises, and I want them to be absolutely correct.

I do not. Does the book include general plans since her original building and in all of her configurations? Also, where can I purchase the book?

Thanks!

Can someone please tell where the upright braces for the aft boat booms where stored on the Missouri during WWll? I can't find them in any of the pictures I have available. I do see a round boom that was stored up near the aft turret, but not the one for the boat boom. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The aft boat booms where usually stowed where they were.
The mast was folded down and laying towards the stern and the boom was folded against the hull pointed towards the stern.

Thanks for responding James. I found the pictures you mentioned and went ahead and mounted the braces as shown.

Couple of observations: I find it interesting how pristine the main decks looked. Obviously, the sailors keep it "shipshape".

Most people weather too much. Even in WW2, there were long stretches of no action where several thousand sailors were put to work cleaning and painting. Of course during action they had more pressing things to do.

The ship was not painted in Measure 22 in this picture, but looked like it was the dazzle pattern since there's a demarcation line of gray tones running on the main deck. So this was earlier in Mo's career.

I'm a huge fan of the Iowa class... am currently building an ancient Sterling 1/200 scale USS Missouri and having a devil of a time getting the stern right. The Sterling kit is totally wrong - has three props, so you get the idea. RandyM, if you are out there I would really appreciate if you would share your stl files with me for my Mo - especially that elusive stern! Would only be printing it out for getting the dimensions right - mine is being built in balsa and plywood, then styrene from the deck up.

Really enjoying this HUGE thread. :thumbs_up_1:

The Sterling kit has several hull simplifications. Above the waterline the kit is much better than the trumpy, it actually isn't too difficult to change the stern as it is easier to add material than subtract once you bevel down to the contour of the stern tunnel.

The bow bulb needs quite a bit of enhancement and the curve of the bilge should be much less slab sided around the forward turrets.

Cheers: T

The Scale Shipyard sells a fiberglass hull to replace the wooden one of that kit.
Much more accurate and a lot less work

If interested, here's a link to 3D-printed products specifically scaled for the Sterling kit. There, you'll find turrets, barrels, directors, ammo lockers, acetylene and oxygen bottles, and even a set of life rings.
