I shaved off the "cockpits" and added appropriate hatches, not the easiest thing to do with the directors mounted on the ship, but easier than when detail is added later!

Sorry I didn't notice that before!

Hate to be "that guy" who is pointing out the niggling differences with each post!

I put down some cash and sprung for Steve's early Mk 37's and Mk 32 5" 38 mounts... Hoping for the best, not the cheapest items. Let you know how they turn out. Shapeways seems to have a schedule lineup but they do give a production and ship date.

Some progress today on 20 mm gun tubs to be placed along the sides of the ship on the main deck level.

Cheers: Tom

Any good firm rumors about Steve Wiper's upcoming book? Nothing on the website that I spot.

Small question?

Rafts as strewn about USN WWII capital ships, color of same? I presume some grayish color, matching the ship or not?

To clean up the snowstorm of "white stuff" cluttering the ship I dusted her with a coat of primer, giving a striking appearance of a ship in the mothball fleet, replete with removed light AA. Of course to then discover I had missed a coaming hatch on the fantail. Painting this thing with all the small deck detail is going to be a challenge.

Still holding my breath (and turning blue) for Steve Wiper's book.

Cheers: Tom

Rafts would be painted/stained to match their surroundings on the ship.

Matt

Ps> I too anxiously await that book :woo_hoo:

These aren't CB's but raft photos are hard to find.

Really interesting! Missouri's are painted blue, wonder if it is deck blue or the Measure 22 Hull Blue. Looks fairly dark so probably the former?

Always new stuff!

Thanks: Tom

Floater net baskets, on Alaska most are deck rather than bulkhead mounted, deck blue or gray?

Cheers. Tom

Does anyone know where the Alaska's accommodation ladders were stored? I have the FDD plans, which shows the upper and lower platforms, but I can't find the ladders themselves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Steve Wiper's book on the CB's is now listed as available. perhaps that will shed the light on many issues!

My guess on the accommodation ladders is that they were lashed to the main deck, Some of the Iowa's had one lashed aft right behind turret three, though storing them in the aircraft hangars might be a possibility. If I can't find where they are stored then I don't have to make the little gems!

Good progress on installing the 14 quad 40 mm mounts.

Cheers: Tom

Which 1/700 kit of the Alaska class is the best? Samek or Classic Warship/Midship Models?

The Turret-mount catalog lists both for the CB? The Mod four has some involved counterbalance opening mechanism rather than the hood? The four has the training stop buffer affixed to the front of the mount and both have the lighter non straight barbette Missouri Style turret base ring. the FDD drawings are not detailed enough on this and could be wrong, showing a simplified straight base ring. Will have to see what I can glean from any photos of the ships on this.

Cheers: Tom

Tom,
All the pictures I have, and I'm sure you have the same ones, show the base rings as being straight, as portrayed on the FDD plans.
You asked about the color of the float baskets. In keeping with the description of MS 22 scheme, I would paint them haze gray. That's what I have done. The same thing for the rafts.
I sure am glad that Steve's book is finally out. Can't wait to get a copy.

A photo using photo stacking to increase depth of field.

Tom,

Wow!!! This is really shaping up nicely!! The PE certainly does add another dimension to the model. Very impressive, indeed!!

Photo stacking? Please elaborate.

Hank
